Mizan The Poet

*On behalf of CAAT (Campaign Against the Arms Trade)*

Dear brothers, sisters and friends

On behalf of campaign against the arms trade (CAAT for short) i would like to thank you for inviting us to speak at this important event where we can exercise the principles that we all believe in by standing in solidarity with the egyptian people in their fight for greater self determination against that tyrant that is Abdul Fettah El-Sisi who has locked up journalists, tortured opponents and clamped down on dissent therefore establishing himself and his regime on an appaling human rights record.

Unfortunately the Sisi dictatorship is a good example of a multi-faceted system that uses some of the worlds most deadliest weapons to impose itself against the needs and the wishes of the people.

The global trade in arms helps sustain the status quo as in the case of egypt, when peaceful protestors take to the streets demanding positive change they are faced with armed helicopters, bullets, guns, tear gas, and other weapons to silence dissent, weapons which were sold to them by our government and arms companies such as BAE Systems which makes them complicit in the erosion of human rights not just within Egypt, but throughout the arab and muslim world.

Although i do believe that things will eventually get better, our government seems to be working hard to make sure that that isnt the case in egypt.

According to human rights watch

“President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi…leads a country that remains in a human rights crisis. Authorities have effectively banned protests, imprisoned tens of thousands—often after unfair trials—and outlawed the country’s largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood. A sweeping counterterrorism law has expanded the authorities’ powers. National Security officers commit torture and enforced disappearances, and many detainees have died in custody from mistreatment. The government continues to investigate independent NGOs and puts journalists on trial”

In an independent article dated 5th november 2015 called ‘UK is ramping up arms sales to military dictatorship, figures show’ journalist jon stone wrote

“More than 1,000 people have been killed since Mr Sisi came to power and 40,000 dissenters are believed to have been jailed, according to human rights groups”

But dealing with these issues doesnt seem to be on our governments agenda as he goes on to write

“But business department figures on arms export licences from the UK to Egypt show a sharp increase in weapons and controlled military hardware sales

The British government must give consent for all arms exports and has allowed millions of pounds in sales to the Egyptian dictatorship.

A £40m licence for armoured vehicles to the regime was granted by the Government in March 2015, compared to a total of £156m in licences to Egypt throughout the whole of the Coalition government”

For a government that states that they champion freedom and human rights, it looks like they themselves will trample over those values in the name of corporate profit and the preservation of british interests.

The arms trade isnt only a profit making industry that serves to preserve the status quo, but in the eyes of CAAT, it is also an industry that is soaked in blood which aims to make profit at the cost of human life.

In order to try to deal to with the concerns of the effects of the arms trade, the majority of the worlds governments, supported by many human rights organisations, signed in what they call the arms trade treaty which according to the arms control association website

“is a multilateral, legally-binding agreement that establishes common standards for the international trade of conventional weapons and seeks to reduce the illicit arms trade. The treaty aims to reduce human suffering caused by illegal and irresponsible arms transfers, improve regional security and stability, as well as to promote accountability and transparency by state parties concerning transfers of conventional arms.”

This definition does not seek to address the many concerns CAAT has regarding the arms trade as in order to “improve regional security and stability”, our governments will continue to sell arms to dictators like sisi, who use deadly weapons, to clamp down on protestors to preserve their position and corporate interests.

This is why CAAT aims to work not to regulate or normalise the trade in arms like the arms trade treaty, but the work of CAAT has one goal in mind, to end the arms trade.

This is a trade that leads to the loss of life while wasting billions of pounds which could be used for investment in things like renewable energy or dealing with the many crises’ caused by austerity while also maintaining a global power imbalance serving to further strengthen the elite at the cost of the majority who do not fall into this bracket.

And this is why, as individuals and as an organisation, caat stands in solidarity with the egyptian people in their quest for human rights and self determination

Thank you

End

Seven years on from Obama’s first drone strike, civilian victim describes his ordeal (Reprieve)

Drone-title-587x330

Post via Reprieve

Today (Saturday January 23) marks seven years to the day since President Obama’s first drone strike in office, which he was reportedly informed afterwards had killed innocent civilians. One of those victims, Faheem Qureshi, was 14 years old at the time of the strike. It killed several members of his family and left him without his left eye and severely burned.

At the time, Faheem was a high school student whose favourite subject was chemistry. Several of his cousins and uncles were killed in the strike, which Faheem survived only because he was able to drag his body far enough away that people felt it was safe to provide aid. Faheem was hospitalised for 24 days in Peshawar before he was recovered enough to leave. To this day, he still requires medical treatment for head injuries suffered in the attack.

During his time in office, President Obama has significantly expanded the CIA’s covert drone programme in Pakistan and Yemen, launching over 500 strikes in those two countries alone. He has never fully acknowledged the programme’s existence nor apologised to any of the hundreds of Yemeni and Pakistani civilians who have been killed since the drone programme began. Analysis of data by international human rights NGO Reprieve in 2014 found that 1,147 people – including women and children – were killed in attempts to target 41 men, raising serious concerns about the ‘precise’ nature of strikes.

Last year, US citizen Warren Weinstein and Italian Giovanni Lo Porto were mistakenly killed in a US drone strike. For the first and only time, President Obama admitted the US’ error and publicly apologised to the families of the two men. Attempts by Pakistani and Yemeni victims to get a similar apology have been met with silence.

Speaking about his ordeal this week to international human rights organization Reprieve, Faheem Qureshi said:

“On January 23rd 2009, a hellfire missile tore my family’s lives apart as they sat down to dinner. The drone strike – President Obama’s first – killed three members of my family. As the sole survivor, I lost my left eye and suffered serious head injuries. I was only 14 years old at the time, but I can still remember as if it was yesterday the feeling of my body burning and how I had to crawl from the rubble to get help. I am told reporting has since revealed that the President was told, almost immediately, that a mistake had been made. He had killed innocent civilians – my family – in the strike.

“In the years since, I have witnessed hundreds of drone strikes in my community that have killed many more innocent civilians. People became scared to go to funerals because drones targeted them. They became scared to remove bodies from the aftermath of a drone strike in case another strike hit. The constant threat from drones dominated every minute of our lives. And yet, seven years on, President Obama will not even fully acknowledge the existence of the covert drone program. The only ‘mistakes’ he acknowledges are an American and an Italian he accidentally killed last year.

“What about the hundreds of innocent Pakistanis who have also lost their lives in drone strikes? What about my family? President Obama knows we were innocent and yet we’ve never received an explanation for why we were targeted, much less an apology. As President Obama prepares to leave the White House, he needs to bring his drone programme out of the shadows. It is past time he face up to what his drones really do and apologise to me, to my family, and to all the other innocent people who have been killed by these terrible weapons.”

Commenting, Jennifer Gibson, staff attorney at international human rights organization Reprieve, which investigates civilian casualties from drone strikes, said: “For seven years, secret  drone strikes have been President Obama’s weapon of choice in the War on Terror.  Taken covertly in places where the US is not at war, these strikes have killed and injured hundreds of innocent men, women and children just like Fahim. Yet, even as is own Generals warn how counterproductive the programme is, President Obama has refused calls for even basic transparency.

This is a legacy no president should want to leave. President Obama needs to bring a halt to this illegal and counterproductive programme. He needs to open it up to scrutiny and he needs to extend the same apology to the innocent Pakistani and Yemenis he has killed, as the one he extended to the families of Warren Weinstein and Giovanni La Porto. Fahim deserves nothing less.”

Islamic Emirate: Let’s first define Peace then strive for its implementation

1-MonogramClear

Post via Islamic Emirate

Recently the news of peace talks is widely circulating. The blessed word of peace has buoyed up hopes among the Afghans because peace is a genuine demand of the Afghan nation. It is a dire need for the development of our beloved country. It is peace which creates an atmosphere of civilized and prosperous life for humans. Therefore it would be better to first define peace and then strive for its implementation. Our intention and goal should be that the cunning and unscrupulous people of the time are not allowed to play another game by distorting the realities and cashing in on the name of peace or God forbid, we face another tragedy and problem.

In Pashto language, the word peace (سوله) is derived from Arabic word (صلح) and (سلم) which means cessation of hostilities and disputes. In Islamic Shariah some conditions and restrictions are added to the definition of peace with the intention to coincide with human interests, dignity and civilization. For example, the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) says:

الصلح جائز بین المسلمین إلا صلحا حَرَّمَ حلالا أو أَحَلَّ حراما) رواه الترمذي وأبو داود وغیرهما)

“Reconciliation is allowed among the Muslims, except for reconciliation that makes the lawful unlawful or the unlawful lawful” Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and others

So our nation should pay attention to this point.

Peace according to Fiqh:

 عقد وُضِعَ لرفع المنازعة) – رد المحتار: ج ۴- ص ۴۹۳-)

It means that peace is a treaty which eliminates disputes and differences among rival sides. The above definition indicates three points. First, two or more sides (of a conflict) should exist because peace is an agreement. Second: there would be hostilities among these sides because if there is no hostility then there is no need for a peace process. Third, the belligerent sides would have willingness to make peace and at the end, all sides should have agreed upon the articles of peace agreement. That following definition of the book Mujalat ul Ahkam would illustrate it further.

  عقدٌ يتّفق فيه المتنازعون في حقّ على ما يَرفع النزاع بينهما) مجلّة الأحكام العدليّة: ج ۱- ص ۵۹۹، المادّة: ۱۵۳۱)

According to Islamic Shariah, the role of mediator is very important in peace process. Allah, the Almighty commands believers.

“the believers are brethren. Make peace among your brethren and fear Allah, so that you may be shown mercy” (Verse:10, Surah:49)

It means that believers should make peace among hostile believers and should fear Almighty Allah in their decision making. In verse nine of Surah Al Hujarat, Almighty Allah commands believers to maintain justice in making peace. Now, the important point is that in the issue of Afghanistan, one side is Muslims and they are Mujahideen while the invaders make-up the other side who are non-Mulims, invaders and combatants. Peace with combatants is a separate topic and needs another discussion. In many verses of the Holy Quran and sayings of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), the role of peace-maker is appreciated and a promise of success is also made with them if they are sincere and have good intention.

  {إِنْ يُرِيدَا إِصْلاحًا يُوَفِّقِ اللَّهُ بَيْنَهُمَ) {لنساء- ۳۵)

“if they wish to set things right, Allah will bring harmony between the two” (Verse:35, Surah 4)

There are several other interesting discussions regarding peace and one could refer to the sources of Islamic Shariah for further research and study.

The people of Afghanistan want peace according to the principles and rules of Islamic Shariah. They respect and welcome mediation of Muslims and Islamic countries. But recent efforts of invaders have raised doubts among our countrymen regarding peace (and their sincerity); what good can one expect from the invading enemy and butcher of thousands of the Afghans? On the other hand, all our friends and opponents know that the Afghan nation will never accept the decision contrary to Islamic Shariah. No doubt every decision which paves the way for prolongation of invasion or creates hurdles in the way of Islamic system creates further chaos instead of peace and prolongs war, is not acceptable to the Afghan nation.

Islamic Emirate: Over 20,000 bombs and 30 year war

afghanistan-bombs-800x532-620x330

Post via Islamic Emirate

The ‘Council on Foreign Relations’ think tank published a report stating that in the year 2015, the United States of America dropped 23144 bombs on Muslim majority countries namely Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. If for the sake of argument we do accept that these bombings are in fact justified, just imagine the destruction these bombs would have brought upon the stated countries and how many innocent people would have been killed in its wake?.

Crusade

Despite the repeated bombings, raids and invasions by infidel Christian powers of Muslim lands over the course of the past few centuries, if the Muslims are still of the belief that all these atrocities are in fact due to oil and other natural reserves, one must beg to question what do you understand to be a crusade?

Or do the Muslims believe that no, in fact this is a war against terrorism or terrorist entities – then why doesn’t a very simple question pop in their minds – if this was in fact war on terrorism then why don’t the world powers also target the terrorist organizations that are found all around the globe, from Russia to Europe, from Korea to Africa and in both the north and south America continents? And why do these same world powers arm and directly support one set of internationally recognized terrorist outfits against not only other another set but against national revolutions? How come the media has left these other terror organizations in the shadows and why aren’t these outfits also being pursued by world powers with the same ferocity and bombings???

The statistics highlighted above are only the bombs which were dropped from the sky by the United States on cities and villages. If these statistics along with the destruction caused in the Muslims countries has not yet amazed you, just delve for a moment over the fact that these statistics have not even mentioned the number of bombs dropped by the coalition partners, Russia and our own so called Islamic regimes!

Even though statistics can never portray the full picture of death and destruction rained upon the believing Muslims by the mantle holders of human rights however if we ponder over yet another fact and then add this tally to the above statistics than perhaps we will wake up from our deep slumber. Just imagine the number of airstrikes, artillery rounds, chemical weapons, small arm rounds and other weaponry which would have been used by invading infidel forces and their lackey auxiliaries for the slaughtering of innocent Muslims in the year 2015? Then take these statistics and multiply them by the decades since the fall of the Ottomon Empire; maybe then you would come to the realization as to why the Muslim world is stuck in the situation that it is and has failed to wrangle itself free from these calamities.

30 Year War

In 2001 when George Bush Junior declared a crusade, he also stated that this war is going to take a while however no one including the United States thought at the time that it would take as long as it has due to the unbreakable resolve of the Mujahidin and heroics displayed by the Muslim Nation.

In this series the former US Defense Secretary and CIA chief, Leon Panetta, stated during an interview with USA Today on 14th October 2014 that the USA should prepare itself for a 30-year war against terrorism. And this statement was something which has now become an important part of the American foreign policy which has currently been dubbed by the officials as the policy of ‘Lasting Defeat’.

If you were to currently ask any American politician about war on terrorism he will conveniently answer you with the ‘Lasting Defeat’ mantra and on 15th of the current month VOA published a report about war on terrorism and the current US policy in which the former deputy director of CIA Michael Morrell remarked that the United States will continue to be substantially involved in the Middle East for the next 10, 15 to 20 years.

And what does ‘Lasting Defeat’ mean? It means that under the terrorizing titles of democracy and human rights, the USA shall reserve the right to continue to attack Islam, the Muslim masses and any group wanting Shariah until they have been permanently defeated! Hence to achieve ‘Lasting Defeat’ the USA shall require ‘Lasting Presence’ and that is the reason why the United States has kept all its propped up regimes under-equipped so that for the upcoming 30 years, none shall summon the courage to demand the US forces leave their countries.

What can the Muslim Ummah do?

So what can the Muslim masses living at crossroads of such a historic battle do to defend their Shariah, basic rights, honor, lives and their upcoming generations from facing the same brutal fate as the Muslims of Burma and Central African Republic?

First and foremost, they must understand with full conviction and accept as a fact that they are living at a juncture in history where a critical battle between Islam and Kufr (Truth and Falsehood) is taking place and which shall be a witness of a very drawn out battle. Therefore the Muslims must shun all defeatist attitude and ask the Lord Almighty for perseverance.

Secondly they must realize that America is not the same power that existed some 15 years earlier. It does not have the same appetite for war, neither the public support nor the same economy, power, prestige or military might. It is currently trying to find local axillary forces in the Islamic world to wage war on behalf of the US against Islamic Revival forces.

If the Muslims seek a guarantee of their existence and way of living then they must roll up their sleeves and begin supporting their Mujahidin brothers so as to discharge their individual Islamic duty, foil anti-Islamic plans of the enemy and shield their future generations from unimaginable horrors.

And most importantly they must arm their kids and relatives with an ideology such that their bowls of patience can never be filled no matter how much strain they are put under; just as Allah Almighty says in his book:

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient ones) (155) Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.” (156) Surah Al-Baqarah

End

Twenty people were killed including 8 attackers during an assault by Al Shabab on the Beach View Hotel at Lido beach, Mogadishu, Somalia on Thursday evening. TTP Darra Adam Khel group Commander Khalifa Umar Mansoor (also known as Naray, Slim) has claimed responsibility for the attack on Bacha Khan University, Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday. At least 22 people died and were injured when 4 gunmen opened fire on staff and students in campus buildings. See following link,

“Pakistan: Massacre at Charsadda University as security at an educational establishment is breached once again”

https://activist1.wordpress.com/2016/01/20/pakistan-massacre-at-charsadda-university-as-security-at-an-educational-establishment-is-breached-once-again/

A video appeared on a Facebook page along with a shorter video clip. The first 10 minute 46 second video begins by showing images of young men involved in the Charsadda attack. Mansoor is then seen with 3 armed men with faces covered and 2 other males. The following is a summary and translation giving the reason for attacking Bacha Khan university.

Pakistan is not an Islamic country and as a result we are facing floods, earthquakes and Allah’s wrath. Pakistan has created a parallel law with Allah and also created an army giving rank to individuals from Captain to General etc. Pakistan had created a parallel education system with Qur’an in schools, colleges and universities and deviating from Allah’s ways. We will take them (educational establishments) out one by one.

Mansoor sees democracy as evil and that the legal, military and political leadership use the educational establishments as breeding grounds to develop future generations to their way of thinking. He stated, “with the mercy of god, our attacks on all universities and schools will continue.”

The men are also seen firing differing types of weapons, demonstrating their sills with arms.

These are the 4 young men who carried out the attack

DARRA ADAM KHEL GROUP

Back in February 2015 Mansoor stated the following,

TALIBAN TTP… Khalifa Umer Mansoor states the following;

“My dear respected and honorable brothers! In Pakistan the battle between truth and falsehood has been clear, on one side the Mujahideen are struggling for establishing shariah (law) while on the other hand the slaves of America are fighting for democracy.

On one side there are madrassas (religious institutions) and on the other hand there are schools and colleges.

On one side there is Imam of mosque and on the other side there is a leader of assembly.

On one side Allah is asked for help while on other side America is asked for help.

So in such situation the difference between truth and falsehood is not difficult.

So you stand up in support of truth instead of supporting falsehood.

Let the pakistan’s ruling community listen to it with open ears, the truth can never be subdued by force. Truth is like a strong spring, when the spring is pressed harder then it comes up again with more force and speed. Remember! Due to many reasons we will win this battle from you and you will face a humiliating defeat.”

A second video clip also appeared on the Facebook page,

On second video clip of 2 mins 18 seconds, Mansoor is seen with another male whose face is obscured. He says that there is a security officer on Jamrud road who abuses the local Muslim people by stopping their cars and carrying out search operations. He does not give any regard to old men and women and such. In view of this, this friend sitting besides him has taken it upon himself to rid US of that evil security person. He will defend our honour through blood and sacrificing his life. We all wish him good luck by the grace of Allah. ….

The person is then seen firing a gun

A mini bus belonging to Kaboora production company was targeted in a suicide bomb attack close to the Russian embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday killing at least seven people and wounded around 25 others. A vehicle rammed a mini-van carrying employees setting it ablaze. Kaboora is owned by Moby which also owns Tolo TV. Kaboora works on projects with Tolo.

Bilal Sarwary, (a local journalist) tweeted,

A security officer tells me, I have seen 2 burned bodies inside a van, a child was also killed & 22 injured in Darul Aman suicide attack.

MOI spokesperson stated that there were four civilians among the dead and 20 more civilians wounded in today’s terrorist attack.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesperson claimed responsibility, stating, “if they do not stop their evil activities this will not be the last attack on them.”

Background to the attack

The Taliban has long been at loggerheads with Tolo accusing the company of biased journalism and designated 2 Afghan media channels as “military objectives” back in 2014 following alleged “propaganda”. At that time Islamic Emirate stated,

“The clear shameless example of propaganda by these satanic networks is a report which they published claiming that on the fourth day following Eid ul Adha when the Mujahideen of Islamic Emirate captured Kunduz city, they (may Allah forbid) attacked a female hostel and violated the honor its students.

These television networks continually published this fabricated report despite the fact that the citizens of Kunduz city have strongly rejected these claims while bearing witness in front of Allah Almighty that all the educational facilities of Afghanistan including the female hostel in Kunduz were closed for holidays and there was no one present.”

Taliban has now how claimed responsibility for the attack on Tolo TV attack and released a statement as follows,

channel-tolonews-live

Remarks by spokesman of Islamic Emirate concerning attack on Tolo intelligence network

“Yesterday the Military Commission of Islamic Emirate made good on its promise of targeting Tolo TV, the country’s largest network for promoting obscenity, irreligiousness, foreign culture and nudity.

The Islamic Emirate wants to clarify that the attack on Tolo was not an attack on the media but on an intelligence network opposing our national unity and our religious and national values. We want to reassure all impartial media outlets. They must not unintentionally compare themselves with Tolo and should withhold from making unwarranted assertions because they cannot harm us.

The Islamic Emirate seeks and has resolved its problems with the media through logic and dialogue. However Tolo did not understand logic, neither did it abide by ethics of journalism nor did it have good conduct. Most of its workers were anti-Jihad and anti-Islam elements trained by foreign intelligence toiling for the Americans for the past many years.

The condemnations by the US embassy, Ashraf Ghani, Abdullah, Dostum and other insignificant figures and organizations can never break our resolve and neither will propaganda and media warnings change our path. Instead of making irresponsible and thoughtless declarations and decisions, everyone should discern their responsibilities.”

Reaction to the attack

President Ashraf Ghani tweeted that it was a “barbaric attack carried out by coward terrorists”.

Tolo said, “we condemn these terrorist attacks that kill innocent Afghans. We await for an update from security and government officials on the details of the attack.”

Bob Dietz (Committee for the Protection of Journalists’s Asia program coordinator) stated,

“Attacks aimed at crushing independent media organizations in Afghanistan are a direct assault on the very foundation of Afghan democracy–a free and open press”.

“Today’s killings not only underscore the vulnerability of the media in the country, but the fragility of Afghan security under which the media must operate. We call on the government to seek out and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime as quickly as possible.”
