Imran Khan writes to Ban Ki-moon (UN) urging action on the plight and persecution of Rohingya

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has written an open letter to UNSG Ban Ki- moon regarding the plight and persecution of Rohingya Muslims which the now retired Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa has described as “one of the most enduring human rights crises on earth.” Khan stated,

“it has been heartbreaking to witness the silence of the UN and international community on the persecution of the Rohingyas in Myamnar since the 70s. The hypocrisy prevalent within the international community on human rights and humanitarian interventions has been acutely evident as the Rohingya crisis has unfolded.”

The minority Rohingya have been fleeing Myanmar which is a predominately Buddhist country for decades. Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Ky has come under severe criticism for failing to make a meaningful stand on the issue. The Dalai Lama has also raised his concerns with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

There are 1.1 million Rohingya not recognized as citizens, rendering them effectively stateless. Al Jazeera reports that the United States has now called on Myanmar’s government “to treat minority Rohingya Muslims as citizens to solve the root cause of the migrant crisis in Southeast Asia” and “for Myanmar’s leaders to speak up on human rights issues”.

The United Nations stated that during the past three years, more than 120,000 Rohingyas have tried to flee abroad by sea. Many are at the mercy of people traffickers who pack them into rickety and overcrowded boats, some countries refuse to take in those that are stranded leaving men, women and children to die of thirst and starvation. There have also been stories emerging of sexual abuse of Rohingya and the Guardian reported that,

“more than 50 people, including several local politicians and officials, were arrested after the discovery of dozens of bodies believed to be those of Burmese Rohingya migrants at the abandoned trafficking camps near the Thai-Malaysian border.

Imran Khan’s letter detailing his concerns reads as follows,

Boston: Imam’s Facebook post alleges his brother Usaama Rahim was shot in back 3 times by police on way to work

Imam Ibrahim Rahim posted message of his brother’s death on Facebook (image FB)

A Facebook post from Imam Ibrahim Rahim alleges his younger brother Usaama Rahim was shot today on his way to work by police in Boston, Massachusetts, US. The victim who was fatally wounded died in hospital. There were no reports of injuries to officers who were checked for stress or the public during the incident. Imam Rahim stated, “we are deeply grieved by the loss of my younger brother. While we understand the need for information. We ask that the press give us time to grieve. We will have a statement once we have met as a family.”

Sky News reported the incident as follows,

“US terrorism investigators have shot dead a man who lunged at them with a knife outside a Boston pharmacy, say police.

An FBI agent and a police officer both opened fire on the suspect, who was under surveillance, outside a CVS on Tuesday.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said the unnamed man had refused orders by members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force to drop a military-style knife.

‘The officers asked him several times to put the knife down,’ the commissioner said.”

Imam Ibrahim Rahim posted the following on Facebook

1625657_1659647894249212_5070128986597047264_n

“Your prayers are requested:

This morning while at the bus stop in Boston, my youngest brother Usaama Rahim was waiting for the bus to go to his job. He was confronted by three Boston Police officers and subsequently shot in the back three times. He was on his cell phone with my dear father during the confrontation needing a witness. His last words to my father who heard the shots were:

I can’t breathe!

While at the hospital, Usaama Rahim died!

From Allah we come, and to Allah we return.”

End

According to CNN the victim was allegedly under surveillance as “part of a broader terror investigation involving suspected Islamist extremists being tracked by the U.S. Joint Terrorism Task Force, a law enforcement official said.”

Dustin Craun (founder Editor-in-Chief at Ummah Wide) stated,

“Usaama Rahim was murdered this morning by the Boston PD (The brother of Oakland’s Lighthouse Mosque Imam Ibrahim Rahim) and instantly the media recycles the FBI narrative that he was under investigation as a “terror-suspect.” The FBI would say that and has said that about any American Muslim they murder because we are all ‘under surveillance.’ Almost 500 police murders in this country in 2015, what a racist and disgusting place this is.”

_83384037_83384036

Boston pharmacy, scene of shooting (image, AP)

Linda Sarsour Executive Director of the Arab-American Association left the following message for Imam Rahim on his FB page in relation to the alleged killing of his brother,

“we learned this morning of the murder of Usaama Rahim, a Black Muslim brother from Boston. He was shot by Boston Police and FBI. Before you post the media’s perspective or government’s – there are many unanswered questions. They have added a national security component to divide and conquer the movement. At the end of the day, a Black man was shot on a bus stop on his way to work and we should treat this like any other case of police violence. All we want is answers to our questions. ‪#‎StayWoke‬

Law enforcement says he was under surveillance (being monitored).
1) how long was he being monitored, 2) what was the basis of the monitoring, 3) what supervisory approval was their for the monitoring, 4) the duration of it, 5) which law enforcement agency set it up, 6) where else did the surveillance lead them that day?

The last question I ask is because of how early this was. Did he go somewhere for Fajr? Did they surveil a place of worship?

The CVS:
1) what prompted them to go to the CVS, 2) was there a reported threat, 3) what law enforcement agencies made up the JTTF (Join Terrorism Task Force), 4) which agency is in charge on site – as in, whose operation is this, 5) who attempted to “speak” with him, locals, Feds, or both.

The actual shooting:
According to the family, he was shot 3 times in the back while on a bus stop going to work. He was on the phone with his father who heard the shots. Last words from Usaama were “I can’t breathe.”

1) Law enforcement says he was brandishing a military knife and came towards them. If its true that he was shot in the back, then this makes no sense.

2) If he was on the phone with his father, was it handheld, headset? Were his hands even free?

MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS, and like all those we demand justice for – this family demands answers. ‪#‎Justice4Usaama‬ “

Afghanistan: 7 Aid workers, 2 guards killed in Balkh and another case of corruption emerges involving US military

 282368_43572908

Security concerns for aid workers grow in Afghanistan (image Dunya)

The Czech non-governmental organization People in Need (PIN) has issued a statement suspending their services in Afghanistan following the killing of 7 aid workers and 2 guards who were allegedly shot dead whilst sleeping at a guesthouse in the Zari district of Balkh province, Afghanistan.

The NGO stated,

“with deep sorrow we inform that a PIN field office in Zare, Northern Afghanistan, was attacked in the night from 1st to 2nd June. Nine of our national colleagues were killed. Investigation is ongoing, the identity of the attackers is not known. PIN has been working in the area since 2002.

We hereby express  our deepest condolences to the families of our colleagues, respect to their work, and we condemn this attack, unprecedented in its brutality. PIN immediately suspends all work in Afghanistan and is adopting measures to strengthen the security of its employees in the country.”

Amnesty International condemned the attack highlighting that “targeting civilians for attack – including humanitarian workers – is a war crime under the Fourth Geneva Convention.” Amnesty International’s Afghanistan Researcher Horia Mosadiq said:

“being an aid worker in Afghanistan is an extremely risky business which will only become more dangerous if the authorities fail to ensure those responsible for these disgraceful attacks face justice.

“The latest attack must be urgently investigated and those responsible brought to justice. Anything less will send the message that aid workers are a fair target.”

No- one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack on the aid workers in Balkh. Islamic Emirate, (Afghan Taliban) claimed responsibility for an earlier attack on a guest house in Kabul frequented by foreigners as part of Taliban Spring Offensive Operation Azm. The Taliban are very unhappy at US military plans to extend use of foreign civilians in their continuing “occupation” of the country, see following link,

“Afghanistan: Islamic Emirate claim attack on Kabul hotel, release reaction to latest NATO announcement”

https://activist1.wordpress.com/2015/05/14/afghanistan-islamic-emirate-claim-attack-on-kabul-hotel-release-reaction-to-latest-nato-announcement/

What doesn’t help security are the regular reports of human rights abuses and corruption by foreigners in Afghanistan. The latest involves two men from the US that “pleaded guilty for their roles in a scheme to launder approximately $250,000 in bribes received from Afghan contractors.” The individuals were named as Jimmy W. Dennis, 44, former First Sergeant with the U.S. Army and James C. Pittman, 45, of Rossville, Georgia. A statement from the US Department of Justice, Office of Public Affairs reads,

“according to pleadings filed at the time of the guilty pleas, from March 2008 through March 2009, Dennis was an Army Sergeant assigned as a paying agent in the Humanitarian Aid Yard (HA Yard) at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan. Dennis was a member of the team in the HA Yard that purchased supplies from local Afghan vendors for distribution as part of the Commander’s Emergency Response Program for urgent humanitarian relief requirements in Afghanistan. Dennis and a partner entered into an agreement to steer contracts to certain Afghan vendors in return for approximately $250,000 in cash bribes.”

“smuggled the bribe money back to the United States hidden in packages addressed to his wife, his father and a former Army friend, Pittman. Dennis sent $80,000 to $100,000 to his father from Afghanistan in packages that contained toy “jingle trucks,” colorfully decorated trucks or buses in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Dennis hid the money in the rear compartment of the toy trucks. Dennis also shipped a hope chest to his father containing approximately $100,000 in cash in a concealed compartment.”

http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/two-individuals-plead-guilty-conspiring-launder-bribes-received-afghanistan

Human Rights organizations must be vocal in condemning those that exploit and violate the Afghan people. The continued presence of US and NATO allies will only incite further violence in the coming months.

German Federal Prosecutor ‘investigating’ US actions on drones base (Reprieve)

ramstein-1

The German Federal Prosecutor is reported to have begun investigating a US base in Germany that is used as a ‘hub’ for drone strikes, days after a Yemeni man testified in a Cologne court about the 2012 strike that killed his relatives.

According to a report in Der Spiegel, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office – Germany’s highest prosecuting authority – has launched a ‘monitoring process’ to ascertain whether activities at Ramstein, a US base in Germany, violate international law. The officials have reportedly requested documents from German authorities, including the Ministry of Defence, relating to the base – which was recently revealed to be a ‘hub’ for the facilitation of drone strikes in Yemen and elsewhere. US drone strikes in countries such as Yemen, where the US has not declared war, have killed hundreds of civilians, and are widely regarded as a violation of international law.

The news comes days after a court in Cologne heard testimony from a Yemeni man who lost his relatives in a strike – the first time any court has heard from drone victims. Faisal bin Ali Jaber lost his brother-in-law Salim, an anti-Al Qaeda preacher, and his nephew Waleed, a police officer, to a 2012 US strike on his village of Khashamir. The German case sees Mr bin Ali Jaber – represented by international human rights organization Reprieve and the European Center for Human Rights (ECCHR) – seeking to challenge Germany’s failure to stop the use of Ramstein for US drone strikes. Although the court last week ruled against Mr bin Ali Jaber, judges agreed with his assertion that it is ‘plausible’ the base is central to the launching of the strikes, and gave him immediate permission to appeal their decision.

Commenting, Kat Craig, Mr bin Ali Jaber’s Reprieve lawyer, said: “The civilian impact of the US’ drone wars in Yemen and elsewhere is well-documented – as is the crucial role played by Ramstein in facilitating these illegal strikes. The prosecutor’s move to investigate the use of German soil in violating international law is a crucial first step in lifting the veil of secrecy over the drone programme. For Faisal – and the scores of other people whose relatives were unlawfully killed in drone strikes – this decision is long overdue. Nothing will bring back their loved ones, but a full and proper investigation into the role of Ramstein will finally shed some light on the role of the German government in the drone programme. Our clients hope that, in doing so, Germany will do the right thing and withdraw support for the US’ drone war, once and for all.”

Phoenix mosque subjected to anti-Islam protest opens door to community, says “love is stronger than hate”

flower

Invitation from mosque to visit on Monday June 1st, 6.30pm and bring a flower as a symbol of love and care.

The Islamic Community Centre of Phoenix Arizona which was the focus of an anti-Islam protest organized by ex-marine Jon Ritzheimer has a message for the world, “love is stronger than hate”.

CGXSF18VIAAnihH

Ritzheimer targeted the centre after it emerged that Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi the 2 gunmen who were shot dead after opening fire outside a conference on cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a suburb of Dallas were alleged to have once attended the mosque. Ritzheimer said during interviews that he believes “true Islam is terrorism” and had organized “F..ck Islam T-shirts for the protest as well as a “Draw Muhammad” session, see following link for earlier story,

“Arizona: Anti-Islam protesters rip up Qur’an in freedom of speech rally outside of mosque”

https://activist1.wordpress.com/2015/05/30/arizona-anti-islam-protesters-rip-up-quran-in-freedom-of-speech-rally-outside-mosque/

Those attending the mosque were advised not to attend the protest but when participants were seen outside, Usama Shami, the president of the ICCP extended a hand of friendship and invited individuals to join him and the 800 members for a prayer. The results were positive, some took up the offer. The Washington Post reported,

“Jason Leger, a Phoenix resident wearing one of the profanity-laced shirts, accepted an invitation to join the evening prayer inside the mosque, and said the experience changed him.

“It was something I’ve never seen before. I took my shoes off. I kneeled. I saw a bunch of peaceful people. We all got along,” Leger said. ‘They made me feel welcome, you know. I just think everybody’s points are getting misconstrued, saying things out of emotion, saying things they don’t believe.’

Paul Griffin, who had earlier said he didn’t care if his t-shirt was offensive, assured a small crowd of Muslims at the end of the rally that he wouldn’t wear it again.

“I promise, the next time you see me, I won’t be wearing this shirt,” he told one man while shaking his hand and smiling. ‘I won’t wear it again.’”

Now an invitation has been sent out to local communities encouraging people to visit the centre and bring a flower as a symbol of love and care. The centre says, “we are better together, and together we are strong.”

DHR Press Report regarding missing persons protest march for International Week of the Disappeared
30th May 2015

‪#‎InternatioanlWeekofDisappeared‬
“It would be a great folly and a sign of ignorance of human nature If any one thinks that efforts to silence us can make us forget our enforced disappeared loved ones” Amina Masood Janjua, chairperson of Defence of Human Rights and flag bearer of missing persons’ movement, said this in a written statement. She was leading a protest march of the families of missing persons in which participants had their mouths shut by bands symbolically. This protest march was part of a series of activities being conducted regarding International Week of Disappeared. This week is celebrated around the world to protest against enforced disappearances. It further stated, “we are standing here in the capital of Pakistan with our mouths shut and want to convey this message to the responsible that our cries shall reach to the throne of Allah even if you succeeded in strangling our voices.”

On the insistence of media persons a participant broke silence and said that “enforced disappearance is open terrorism. What kind of peace is the government searching for by disappearing its own citizens?” Another person said that “the state will lose its moral authority if it will stoop down to the level of terrorists.”

10509549_992073837469955_6853663347884886084_n

Mr Asad Umer, a central leader of Pakistan’s leading opposition party Tehreek-e- Insaaf also joined the rally to express solidarity with the constitutional stance of DHR Pakistan. While addressing the rally he said that, “Amina Janjua is standing for the rule of law and constitution. Missing persons’ movement is on the right and all the enforced disappeared persons and their families should be given justice. DHR’s struggle will not only benefit myself and my kids but for future generations as well. Defence of Human Rights (DHR) is the leading organization of missing persons in Pakistan which was founded by Mrs Amina Masood Janjua after the abduction of her husband Masood Janjua in 2005. This year on 30th July 10 years of Masood’s disappearance shall be completed. DHR Pakistan is endeavoring to eradicate enforced disappearance from around the world and especially from Asia. It is representing 2171 cases of enforced disappearance in Supreme Court of Pakistan as well as in Commission of Inquiry of Enforced disappearance, a body formed by government of Pakistan to look into the cases of enforced disappearances. It is known fact that many families of disappeared refrain from launching any official complaint for fear of reprisals yet Chief Justice of Peshawar High Pakistan informed last year that there are 3055 cases of enforced disappearance either pending before the court or have been adjudicated. This brings the total to 5226 of confirmed cases of disappearances in the country. DHR Pakistan demands that all the disappeared persons be surfaced immediately and enforced disappearance be declared a punishable crime after ratifying United Nations convention to protect all persons from enforced disappearance.
