Decades of campaigning by haemophiliacs and families and still no compensation for victims
(Haemophilia Campaign Archives)
Letter to Cabinet Office sent March 10th 2020
Dear Sir/Madam, (Haemophiliacs, Contaminated Blood and Compensation)
I note with great interest the following article,
“Coronavirus: Volunteers offered £100 a day to be infected with virus in race to find vaccine” (Independent, 10th March 2020)
This is with “informed consent”.
Haemophiliacs were used in research experimentation infected with multiple deadly viruses WITHOUT informed consent and have been used as a study group for 30 to 40 years. I have research papers showing evidence of this.
Lord Archer stated haemophiliacs must be paid compensation PER VIRUS. So if we take this infection figure of £100 a day over an average of 35 years (some may be more, some less) in the case of factor concentrates it is recognized that haemophiliacs were infected with hepatitis viruses from their first shot of imported factor concentrate often 1970s and from 1980s onwards with HIV this comes to….
£3, 832,500 that a haemophiliac with HIV, hepatitis B and C would be owed in compensation according to the calculations of my fellow campaigner Sean Cavens.
£1,277,500 for hepatitis C alone.
The rate of £100 a day over the period of infection (as independently assessed with Coronavirus) would seem to be a good baseline on which to base compensation and in the case of deceased haemophiliacs as already established in US litigation, the next of kin inherits the claim. In fact haemophiliacs should be paid extra due to lack of informed consent and being given treatment which led to considerable damage and in many cases death.
1)What plans are being made by the Cabinet Office to compensate haemophiliacs and their families
2) What consideration will be made to compensate haemophiliacs at the infection rate of £100 a day from the date of infection per virus?
This does not even include exposure to v CJD which would also need to be taken into account.
Haemophiliacs and their families have received no compensation to date and going by this £100 a day figure, the ex-gratia payments are clearly woefully inadequate for the level of damage caused!
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours sincerely
