At least 10 people are believed to have been killed in an alleged suicide attack when a vehicle exploded outside the Jazeera hotel in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu. BBC reported that “Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack on the hotel” popular with UN officials. AFP reported that, “the diplomatic missions of both China and Qatar are based in the hotel.”

African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) stated, “we can confirm that there was an explosion at Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu, a few minutes ago. The base camp in Mogadishu is not under attack. AMISOM personnel are on the ground and are providing all the necessary support at Jazeera Palace in Mogadishu”

Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operations spokesman, told Reuters, “it is a response to attacks and helicopter bombing against al Shabaab by AMISOM and the Somali government.”

The following tweets covered the incident

The Jazeera Hotel serves as the de facto embassy of the People’s Republic of China & houses various international agencies.

Kudos to Jazeera hotel security who made it impossible for attackers to storm into hotel. Prevented further bloodshed & loss of life.

Afghanistan: Mullah Omar states, “I will strongly defend my sharia-based stance on every front”

1-MonogramClear

“I will strongly defend my sharia-based stance on every front”

Esteemed Amir ul-Momineen

Message of felicitation of the esteemed Amir ul Momineen on the occasion of Eid ul Fitr of the current year was warmly welcomed by the Afghan people and widely reflected in media outlets at local and international level. Different circles have expressed their opinions about it. It portrayed an image of courage, sagacity and compassion of a kind-hearted Muslim leader to the world.

In addition to the message of felicitation to his people regarding Eid ul Fitr and the recent great victories, the esteemed Amir ul Momineen once again assured and emphasized as saying: “I will strongly defend my sharia-based stance on every front”. As he put it, not abiding by the lofty stance of Islam and ignoring the rules of Shariah is forbidden (Haram) in Islam. Like previous messages, he considers the independence of the beloved country and establishment of an Islamic system as the legitimate and rightful objectives of the struggle.

The esteemed Amir ul Momineen (may Allah protect him) has explained to his great and brave nation the cause of the holy and legitimate struggle. The message has touched on both political and military aspects of the sacred Jihad to elucidate it to the Muslim nation in unambiguous words. The message also draws their attention to the conspiracies, schemes and deceptions of enemy.

The esteemed Amir ul Momineen has mentioned reasons behind the duty of the sacred Jihad. He also pointed to the ruling of Islamic scholars against invaders fourteen years ago on the basis of the teachings of Holy Quran that sacred Jihad against them is an individual obligation. Therefore as the occupation still continues, so does the validity of sacred Jihad against it. The esteemed leader says: “In the light of this religious ruling, Jihad is as obligatory today as it was in the beginning of foreign occupation because our Muslim homeland (Afghanistan) is still under occupation and both its land and air space is controlled by the invaders”

Amir ul Momineen (may Allah protect him) has also discussed political activities for the obtainment of Jihadic achievements and considers it as a legitimate mean for the obtainment of greater objectives. He considers the life of the Holy Prophet of Allah, the Almighty and the Great Leader of Mujahideen, Mohammad (peace be upon him) as a touching-stone of his sacred struggle. Mentioning military and political activities of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), he concludes: “The objective behind our political endeavors as well as contacts and interactions with countries of the world and our own Afghans is to bring an end to the occupation and to establish an independent Islamic system in our country. It is our legitimate right to utilize all legal pathways”,

The esteemed leader, due to his sagacity and God gifted insight, acknowledges the importance of political activities. That is why he established the Political Office for further effectiveness of political momentum and it carries out its activities in light of direct instructions and orders of the esteemed leader. Some internal and external circles are trying to create externations among our oppressed people regarding the political activities of the Islamic Emirate. Thus, on the bases of their futile propaganda, they want to create hurdles in the way of true peace. These selfish activities have drawn the attention of Amir ul Momineen (may Allah, the Almighty protect him) and mentioned it in his message as saying: “We have established a ‘Political Office’ for political affairs, entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring and conducting all political activities”. Through the above mentioned sentence, on one hand the sagacious leader has thwarted and eliminated all overt and covert conspiracies which interrupt the process of durable peace and on the other hand, has kept the political office open as the only reliable and exclusive contact address for peace.

Drones: Registration and chips proposed to monitor personal drones whilst govts get away with murder

Drone victim’s family, Yemen…its legally acceptable for US to kill civilians by armed drone (image NODV, Yemen)

As the years go by the US and UK hypocrisy on armed drones grows ever more incredible. Despite the growing case of attacks by white extremists in America and the UK and governments saying they have full confidence in their drone programmes, there have been no drone attacks on US or British soil targeting these particular “suspects”. Drones are reserved for Muslims, predominately non-white with the majority strikes carried out well clear of the major cities designed to hit Tribal Areas near Afghanistan/ Pakistan border or desert areas in Yemen. Whites that are killed by drones tend to be so called “accidental” cases such as hostages with Al Qaeda or the Taliban, white “collateral damage” or Brits and Americans fighting abroad that are not named targets but are in the location of a signature drone strike.

Drone victims, Yemen, no accountability from US and UK govts for drone strikes

(Image NODV, Yemen)

While there is very little accountability from UK and US govts regarding their use of armed drones which kill many civilians, there are as expected restrictions likely to be placed on individuals using unarmed drones. On the one hand, the Armed Forces have designed a RAF Predator Drone and Remote Operator playset aimed at 4 to 9 year olds to encourage the idea of militarism and remote controlled murder but should an adult wish to use an unarmed drone in the UK not under the military, they will likely be placed on a register in future. See following,

“a licensing regime or the use of digital identity chips in the drones are some of the options that were raised by industry and police representatives, leading to the following recommendation:

We have already recommended the creation of an online database through which commercial RPAS pilots can provide details of their flights to inform other airspace users. We heard compelling arguments as to why the leisure use of RPAS presents risks to the general public and other airspace users. Therefore, in the long term, we foresee the need for a system which can track and trace all RPAS, especially those flying below 500ft, irrespective of whether they are flown by commercial or leisure pilots. This will be essential not only to manage the increased traffic in the sky, but also to enforce existing and future laws governing RPAS use.”

See following link,

https://gigaom.com/2015/03/05/personal-drone-registration-will-become-necessary-u-k-lords-advise/

Governments are in fact terrified of customized drones being turned on them. Back in 2013,I warned that in the future we would see small personal drones being turned into weapons, I stated,

“will personal drones be the future of assassination, targeted killing? Governments have had the upper hand on drone technology in recent years but is that about to be challenged? What will governments think of drones then? There is an old saying, “what goes around, comes around” and that day may not be too far off!”

See “Drones: I predict personal drones will be used for targeted killing, what goes around comes around.”

Drone_with_Gun_c0-11-700-418_s400x233

Civilians who use personal drones, like this “flying gun” are in future likely to be registered, and drone chipped (Image Washington Times)

Recently I posted a video where an American citizen, Austin Houghwout an 18-year-old mechanical engineering student customized a drone to act as a remote controlled aerial weapon, a “flying gun”. US campaigners (whether we like it or not) fight very hard to maintain their right to bear arms. As the Second amendment states “a well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” (ratified by Thomas Jefferson, 1791). So it could be argued that the owner was expressing his right to bear arms albeit remotely. After all a person may have to defend themselves against a white extremist in a shopping mall.

However as the Washington Times highlights after the video went viral on YouTube the owner is now being investigated by Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) though he does not appear to have broken any rules. As Peter Sachs, an attorney and drone advocate, told ABC

“there are countless ways that drones can be useful. Using one as a remote-controlled weapon is not one of them, and I question the judgment of anyone who would attempt to do so,”

SPOT ON… unfortunately this is not legally applied to the CIA who do exactly that, I question the judgement of governments on drones every single day, as do the victims!

Anti-drone systems are currently being developed and will no doubt be used against personal drone owners but will there be development to take out the larger armed drones too?

Battlefield Casualties, Action Man: Wet pants and weeping soldiers, the reality of joining up

IMG_6442-edit

The bloody and painful reality of war depicted in Darren Cullen’s

“Battlefield Casualties: Action Man”

If you have ever seen a video of the Taliban targeting NATO forces in Afghanistan it is not a pretty sight. It usually involves an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) and an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) and shows soldiers catapulted several feet into the air, limbs blown from bodies or burnt alive in a vehicle death trap. The sounds of “Allahu Akbar” (God is Great) rises with every kill and why wouldn’t they cheer, the Taliban are after all defending their home territory from an occupying force… wouldn’t Britain do the same? Occasional close-ups gleefully filmed by the militants show blood-drenched soldiers cowering in terror, some so afraid they have urinated on themselves, others crying like babies being comforted by fellow recruits. That is the reality of war.

This is the side that artist Darren Cullen aims to capture through his writing in a series of 3 hard-hitting short films aimed at youngsters considering joining the Armed Forces. The videos directed by Price James are designed to mimic the original Action Man TV advertisements loved by children with a voice-over from Matt Berry, BAFTA award-winning English actor and musician. The “Battlefield Casualties” website, draws attention to the UK’s controversial child recruitment policy for the military which has come under criticism from human rights organizations. We learn that,

“the UK is one of only nineteen countries worldwide, and the only EU member, that still recruits 16 year olds into its armed forces, (other nations include Iran and North Korea). The vast majority of countries only recruit adults aged 18 and above, but British children, with the consent of their parents, can begin the application process to join the army aged just 15.”

Recruits often come from the poorest background and the youngest end up serving in a front-line combat role. However firmly imprinting the military in the mind of the young comes much earlier than age 16 as the Ministry of Defence even has a range of toy soldiers, called HM Armed Forces aimed at ages 4 to 9 years old. What is deeply disturbing is the inclusion of the RAF Predator Drone and Remote Operator playset which encourages the notion of target killing at a very impressionable age. Those who have viewed the distressing images of the remains of children caught up in drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Afghanistan (mistaken for militants) will be horrified.

preadator-drone

As Cullen told the HuffPost when he devised an earlier comic strip on the same military theme,

“war is a living hell of suffering pain and despair, but somehow the army manages to rebrand it for each new generation as an exciting and character building adventure. Despite what they show in their adverts, being in the armed forces isn’t about abseiling or kayaking, its about twisting your bayonet into someone’s stomach and having your face blown off in a trench.”

ptsd_action_man

The first short film in the series “Battlefield Casualties” depicts the polar opposite of what we may remember of the adrenaline fuelled Action Man ads. Gone is the daring adventurer with his smart uniform and weaponry. He is replaced by a distraught veteran in a vest, beer can in hand struggling to cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The viewer learns that once the glorious homecoming has passed, he must face depression and anger, a feeling of isolation and the financial difficulties that can arise on returning to civilian life. “PTSD Action Man” is last seen with his head in a noose and we are left wondering if he sees death as his only way out.

This video initiative from Cullen is made in collaboration with Veterans For Peace (VFP) a voluntary ex-services organization of men and women who have served in every war that Britain has fought since World War 2. Their website lists the focus of their work as follows,

Educate young people on the true nature of military service and war.

Resist war and militarism through non-violent action.

Stand in solidarity with people resisting militarism and war.

They hope to convince people that war is not the answer to the problems of the 21st century. Speaking about Battlefield Casualties, a VFP spokesperson on Facebook stated,

“the ad is dark satire. It is not actually advertising toys to children. The purpose is to expose people to the very harsh realities of military service, instead of lying to impressionable children in the style of military recruiters, fancy marketing campaigns, and military-style video games.”

paralysed_action_man

In the second short film the viewer is introduced to a wheelchair bound “Paralysed Action Man whose legs really don’t work, spine shattered by an IED and with his bowels out of action, only a colostomy bag can save him from disaster.”

dead_action_man

Finally short film number three shows us new “Dead Action Man” in the battlefield. He is spurting copious amounts of blood from limbless stumps and is later zipped up in a body bag complete with dog tag. We see with cynicism that all his grieving family have to look forward to is a medal and a flag draped coffin ceremony with full military honors.

Battlefield Casualties Video can be viewed here,

http://battlefieldcasualties.co.uk/

Battlefield Casualties was released to mark Armed Forces Day on the 27th June 2015. On Friday 10 July, three members of Veterans For Peace UK were filmed discarding their medals in Whitehall, London delivering speeches rejecting militarism. These men are angry that they were recruited at such a young age, exploiting their naivety and made to fight in wars such as Iraq, that is not even considered legal. What takes real guts is to admit that the system that sent you to war got it badly wrong and that your government sold you down the river. The final image in this video is of an oath of allegiance document thrown onto the ground, it bears the message “no to child recruitment” clearly visible in a crumpled corner. See following,

Moazzam Begg’s uplifting words on the release of Babar Ahmad during Eid ul-Fitr

iStock_000008991794Small

Babar Ahmad leaving prison behind… (Image via MVD)

Babar Ahmad is freed during the days of Eid ul-Fitr. الله اكبر و لله الحمد

News of the release of Babar Ahmad after almost a dozen years in prison reminds me of the Quranic verses: “Verily, after hardship comes ease” and “Whoever has taqwa [God-consciousness] Allah will create an exit for him.”

Despite being imprisoned in Guantanamo I’d never experienced the British prison system other than on trips to HMP Long Lartin where I used to visit Babar before his extradition. Talking to him was an absolute pleasure. After two hours of the most wonderful and engaging discussion I would always leave him with a sense of sadness and enrichment: sadness, knowing that he was returning to more indefinite years in prison and an ordeal, after so long without trial, that was yet to begin if he was extradited to the U.S. but, enriched and revitalised by his profound sense of justice and genuine care for other prisoners and matters far beyond.

I still, however, couldn’t understand what it was like for him once I left and he returned to life in his cell. That only happened two years later when I had my own short spell in a high security British prison and finally began to understand something of his experience – but only after he was extradited.

I’d often explain to Babar my experience of US custody in preparation for his own impending imprisonment there. Once his fight against extradition failed we all knew that as a Muslim terrorism suspect in the U.S. his only prospect of freedom was a plea bargain. Even then, based on sentencing in U.S. I expected he’d spend a very long time imprisoned before coming home. But relief came in the most unexpected form: the sentencing judge had to this to say (of both Talha Ahsan and Babar in particular):

“Neither of these two defendants were interested in what is commonly known as terrorism … It appears to me that he [Babar] is a generous, thoughtful person who is funny and honest. He is well liked and humane and empathetic…This is a good person…”

Only a few weeks ago I spent the evening with Babar’s funny and sweet father and discussed the imminent return of his son. He had many apprehensions and fears but kept looking at my experiences in the prisons of the world as a source of hope. Al hamdu lillah I assured him he had nothing to worry about, especially after how the judge had described him.

In fact, that was where the help of Allah came from – the most unexpected place. Allah says: “Perhaps you detest a thing and it is good for you and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you.” A record-breaking petition signed by 141,000 to have Babar tried in the UK fell on deaf government ears. Yet, who could have imagined Babar’s (and Talha’s) deliverance would come, eventually, from the one thing he’d fought against all these years?

“Whoever has reliance on Allah then He is sufficient for him.” That is the lesson from the story of Babar Ahmad, Talha Ahsan, Omar Khadr, Abu Qatada and many others whose cases we’ve fought for over the years. It’s my lesson too.

There are many others who remain imprisoned without charge or trial like Shaker Aamer, or who’ve been convicted on bogus entrapment evidence like Munir Farooqi while others have received unbelievably long sentences for victimless “crimes” abroad trying to defend civilian populations from chemical attacks, barrel bombs and sectarian butchery or, for simply being misguided teens.

But let’s praise Allah in all circumstances and remember that “when Allah loves His servant he tests him”. May we be among those who pass with grace, patience, perseverance, faith and without bitterness, like our brothers, if chosen.

الله اكبر الله اكبر الله اكبر لا اله الا الله، الله اكبر الله اكبر و لله الحمد

Balochistan, what is going on in Awaran? Campaigners claim no access for media during military operations

CKSh3i-UwAA5TK8

A poster from the Awaran Operation Twitter campaign (Image, Arawan Operation)

Its difficult to know what is going on in Awaran, a district in the south of Balochistan, Pakistan. National and international media appear to have very little access to report on the region. What scant information is coming out is through official government or military sources but what is often missing is the voices of locals. Reporting tends to be one sided through scarcity of opportunity and Balochistan does not hold a good safety record for locals and journalists that are often “disappeared”  tortured and unlawfully killed. As Raza Rumi stated in September 2014,

“there is a dark history – and an equally murky present – when it comes to journalists working in Balochistan. Since the reawakening of the Baloch separatist movement after the murder of Nawab Akbar Bugti in 2006 and the subsequent security operations, the security situation in the province has deteriorated – with journalists being at the center of this conflict.”

What is coming from Pakistani media is that an operation was launched by Frontier Constabulary on Saturday 18th July 2015 which allegedly killed 9 militants including several from a banned group named the Baloch Liberation Front. The BLF are fighting for an independent Balochistan, claiming Balochs are a distinct nation which was annexed by Pakistan in 1947/48 following separation from India. According to Dunya, the Balochistan Interior Minster stated those who died in Saturday’s assault were terrorists “involved in killing of 44 personnel of FWO and were also involved in spreading terrorism in the province”. They were also said to be linked to incidents in Turbat and Mastung and a large quantity of arms were allegedly found. There are several insurgent groups active in Balochistan and some infighting which can also complicate the picture for those reporting on the conflict.

“Shaheed Suleman aka Shehak Baloch” (BLF) delivers his final message before death (Still from video)

Recently a video emerged on social media showing the final moments of “Shaheed Suleman aka Shehak Baloch” a BLF Commander before he died from gunshot wounds in what was claimed to be an encounter with Pakistan military. Several locals that were gathering for a funeral were alleged to have been “massacred” and dragged behind vehicles leaving their bodies barely recognizable. The video which appeared to show the bodies has since been removed. For background on the killing and some history of the troubles in Balochistan see following link,

Today Baloch activists took to Twitter to express their anger and concerns at what they claim is the second day of a military operation (Sunday) and called on human rights groups for support. Although comments could not be independently verified, here are some of the tweets:-

Activists were keen to point out that Awaran is under attack at the same time as talks are being held in London. Dawn states,

” three-member delegation of the Balochistan government headed by tribal elder and Minister for Services and General Administration Department Nawab Muhammad Khan Shahwani reached London to hold talks with the self-exiled Baloch leader and Khan of Kalat, Mir Suleman Dawood Jan.!

As talks are underway abroad there are claims of aerial bombardment, of attacks on civilian houses (which can constitute a war crime) and dozens of casualties. There is no way of ascertaining what is correct and what is not without independent reporters and human rights organizations being allowed into Awaran. There are now growing calls on Twitter for the Khan of Kalat to dismiss talks with CM Malik until the Pakistan Army withdraws from Balochistan.

Babar Ahmad free: Statement from the family and first words from Babar on release

11745840_10153442236902118_7743636375066558744_n

Babar Ahmad (41) of Tooting, south London who was sentenced in a US court to 12-and-a-half years in prison for providing material support to the Taliban via the internet has now been released back home to the UK. Ahmad was accused of being “the mastermind behind the world’s first English website dedicated to jihad”. At the time of sentencing, the Guardian reported the judge as saying,

“‘Ahmad was not an operational terrorist, showed he posed no threat to the public and exhibited remorse for setting up websites that promoted jihad.’

The judge said she was struck by the impact the Bosnia War had had on him, where he had gone as an 18-year-old and saw the suffering of Muslims, after which he committed to jihad.”

Ahmad was never charged with any offences in the UK. Details of his case can be read in the “Links” section. The following is the press release from the family and the first words from Babar on release.

PRESS RELEASE: FIRST STATEMENT OF BABAR AHMAD UPON RELEASE FROM US PRISON AFTER 11 YEARS SUNDAY 19 JULY 2015 (FREEBABARAHMAD.COM

We, the family of Babar Ahmad, are delighted to announce that by the grace of God, Babar has returned home to us after 11 years in prison. Our lives will be enriched by his return.Although the past 11 years have been indescribably difficult for us all, we were heartened by Judge Janet Hall’s comments at Babar’s sentencing this time last year. She said: “There was never any aid given by these defendants to effectuate a plot. By plot, I mean a terrorist plot … Neither of these two defendants were interested in what is commonly known as terrorism … It appears to me that he [Babar] is a generous, thoughtful person who is funny and honest. He is well liked and humane and empathetic…This is a good person who does not and will not seek in the future to harm other people.” Today, we remember and thank all those who have supported us throughout. But for now, we kindly ask everyone to give us some privacy and space and not to contact us for the time being.

Babar has the following comment to make:

“11 years of solitary confinement and isolation in ten different prisons has been an experience too profound to sum up in a few words here and now. In October 2012, I was blindfolded, shackled and forcibly stripped naked when I was extradited to the US. Last week, US and UK government officials treated me with courtesy and respect during my journey home. ”

“Today, I have absolutely nothing. Yet I am rich. All praise be to God.”

“In time, I look forward to sharing reflections on my experience to help inform others. I recognise that the world has moved on since 2004, yet in some ways, sadly it has failed to progress. ”

“For now, I intend to reconnect privately with my incredible family, to whom I owe so much. It was a great joy to celebrate Eid with them for the first time in 11 years and to hug three of my nieces and nephews whom I had never met before. It has been a long time.”

Note:

Judge Hall’s comments can be found at pages 33, 49, 67, and 106 of the official sentencing transcript in U.S. v Babar Ahmad 3:04CR301(JCH), CT, July 16, 2014. The full document can be downloaded here:http://freebabarahmad.com/downloads/Babar%20Ahmad%20sentencing%20transcript.pdf

Chattanooga: The man behind the shootings, divided loyalties, and a case of mistaken identity

CKEY_Y6WcAASalS

Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez (Image Hamilton County Sheriffs Office via AP)

It is unclear at this present time exactly what motivated Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez (24) a naturalized U.S. citizen, born in Kuwait to turn on two US military establishments in Chattanooga, Tennessee shooting dead 4 marines and wounding 3 other persons. The deceased were named as, Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Lance Clp. Squire K. Wells, Staff Sgt. David Wyatt and Sgt. Carson Holmquist. A 5th person who died later from his injuries was named as Randall Smith, a US Navy logistics specialist. Abdulazeez who was said to be armed with “numerous weapons” was the 6th person to die in the incident.

The attack on Combined Armed Forces Recruiting Center and a military facility housing a Naval Operational Support Center and Marine Reserve Center is according to U.S. Attorney Bill Killian being treated as “domestic terrorism”. Newsweek reports,

“the FBI said that at the first military site, Abdulazeez shot from inside his vehicle. He then drove about 15 miles to the second facility, exited his vehicle, and opened fire again. An autopsy will be performed to learn more about how Abdulazeez was killed.”

See link below for an ABC report on the incident,

“Chattanooga Shooting: Four Marines Dead in Shooting at Military Offices”

http://abcnews.go.com/US/shooting-confirmed-tennessee-navy/story?id=32494050

Background on Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez

To date there is no indication as to whether Abdulazeez who studied engineering for 4 years at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and enjoyed wrestling and martial arts was a “lone wolf” or inspired, connected to any terrorist organization. Sandy Shrader who trained Abdulazeez told ABC,

“it’s been kind of surreal, I said, no, that’s crazy because I trained that kid. He was a great kid. I’m kind of in the position that I mourn for the kid that he was, but I have utter contempt for the man he became.”

Investigators are exploring comments on Abdulazeez’s Facebook page in an effort to determine his thinking. They are also looking into a trip to Jordan he made which a friend claimed changed him and a possible visit to Yemen. This was a young man who was a practising Muslim, prayed 5 times a day but was also detained for a drink driving offence (alcohol is forbidden in Islam).

ABC reported Abdulazeez briefly worked at Perry Nuclear Power Plant in Ohio but only for 10 days as he did not fit basic requirements. He allegedly failed a background test though “was never granted unescorted access and never entered the secured area of the plant”. Reuters also reported, according to unnamed law enforcement officials, “the gunman’s father was at one point on a terrorist watch list and was questioned while on a trip overseas.” However there was also caution as this was an old investigation and did not raise anything to implicate Abdulazeez whose father was eventually removed from the watch list. Other media reports including the Daily Beast alleged Abdulazeez came from an abusive family background another possible consideration when looking at his mindset. The FBI released the following as an initial statement on the shootings,

“the FBI’s Knoxville Field Office, along with the Chattanooga Police Department and other law enforcement partners, are working jointly to investigate today’s shootings at a military recruitment center and a reserve center in Chattanooga, Tennessee in which four individuals were killed and three injured. The shooter, Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24, is also deceased. While it would be premature to speculate on the motives of the shooter at this time, we will conduct a thorough investigation of this tragedy and provide updates as they are available.”

Abduleezeez’s actions were strongly condemned by many including President Obama who promised a prompt and thorough investigation.

Charlie Daniels didn’t think Obama went far enough when he tweeted,

Mr President Americans in my home state died at the hands of a MUSLIM extremist yesterday and you refuse to even call them what they are

Divided loyalties for Muslim Americans?

Islamic Center of Greater Chattanooga decided not to celebrate Eid to remember those killed by Abdulazeez

The Islamic Center of Greater Chattanooga attended by Abdulazeez took the decision not to celebrate Eid al-Fitr which marks the ending of Ramadan and issued the following statement from Bassam Issa, President of the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga,

“we are tremendously saddened by today’s shooting in our home town of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Our hearts are with the families of the brave Marines who died today and with the police officer and two bystanders who were shot and injured in this cowardly act.

We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms as one of cowardice and hate. At the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga, we don’t see our community center as a “Muslim” community; we are Chattanoogans first, and we see ourselves as part of the larger community of Tennesseans grieving today’s act.”

It is understandable that the Islamic Center would wish to condemn strongly the attack and express their deep concern at the shooter coming from their own community, however some Muslims are already questioning does the statement go too far? Muslims by the nature of their faith are expected to see their commitment to Islam and Allah as being first and foremost in their lives and should not have to deny their Muslim identity. Although the killings are seen by the Center as abhorrent, it is essential to try to discover the reasoning behind the attack and explore the challenges faced by those who are both Muslim and American. Something which may well have occupied the mind of Abdulazeez.

The statement from the Islamic Center refers to the death of “brave Marines” (one was awarded a Purple heart). However, what we must not forget is that 3 of those killed served in Iraq, (a war which is seen to be “illegal” as the decision to go to war was based on false information) and Afghanistan which was a war also viewed as highly controversial. CNN reported what is generally viewed as the government line,

“the four joined the Marines to serve their country, willing to go to dangerous lands out of a sense of duty, idealism and patriotism. And three of them did so, risking their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ultimately, the men died together on home turf, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.”

See, “4 Marines killed in Chattanooga were beloved family members”

http://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/17/us/chattanooga-tennessee-marines-killed/

The comment from CNN may well reflect the view of many Americans but US and allies invasion and occupation of Iraq was mired in the mass killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians aside from combatants and the many other violent deaths. Some will view Iraq and Afghanistan very differently. The war led to a huge escalation of conflict between Sunni and Shia Muslims ongoing to this day. There was a culture of torture within Iraq’s prisons such as Abu Ghraib that was so bad it helped spawn the anger and hatred which led to the forming of Islamic State. Afghanistan was invaded, occupied, fiercely bombarded with jets and drone strikes and is home to the notorious Bagram prison where again many detainees were subjected to horrific torture. Now Afghans suffer brutal human rights abuses according to human rights organizations under the very institutions put in place and financed by US after removal of the Taliban from power. Does the Islamic Centre go along with the government narrative on Iraq and Afghanistan? Is there fear in expressing an alternative viewpoint in case of reprisals?

The behaviour of then President George Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair and the allied forces in Iraq has led to accusations of “war crimes”. In the UK, the Chilcott Inquiry has been set up to consider, “the UK’s involvement in Iraq, including the way decisions were made and actions taken, to establish, as accurately as possible, what happened and to identify the lessons that can be learned.” The Islamic Center has taken the decision not to celebrate Eid due to the attack on the military. I wonder did the Center ever cancel Eid in sympathy with all the Iraqis and Afghans that suffered for years at the hands of the west? America and its allies must now face the horrors they helped create and the consequences.

Image from Islamic State hacking division warning in relation to US armed forces members

Earlier this year a group claiming to be IS hacking division released the names, addresses and photographs of military personnel in the US. Their message to supporters was to “kill them in their own lands, behead them in their own homes, stab them to death as they walk their streets thinking they are safe” see following link,

“Islamic State hacking division release personal details of US service members, urges supporters to kill on US soil”

https://activist1.wordpress.com/2015/03/21/islamic-state-hacking-division-release-personal-details-of-us-service-members-urges-supporters-to-kill-on-us-soil/

Although no evidence has come to light so far linking Abdulazeez’s attack to IS, the timing is interesting as it coincides with chatter on social media to unleash terror on western countries now that Ramadan is over. IS media shows that both military and nuclear installations are considered targets.

ABC reports that Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, (brother of George Bush) and has now called for a ban on carrying guns in military recruiting offices to be lifted. He stated,

‘it seems to me that if you have military bases or recruiting offices, these are symbols of American might, they’re targets. This is how you garner attention. You go to places where there’s vulnerability, and it’s a very powerful symbolic attack on our country.”

“If the Marines were armed, I think people would’ve known that, and if they had known it, maybe they wouldn’t have come in. Who knows. I just think it ought to be reviewed for sure.”

Arming those working in military recruiting offices is unlikely to prevent further attacks on the military, the list of leaked service personnel was widely circulated on social media… will the homes of all armed service personnel now be guarded? This would not be practical and 24 hour surveillance would be of huge cost to the country.

What the US should reflect on is the haste in which the government and military rushed to invade, occupy and bomb other countries and its use of drone strikes. The responsibility for the Chattanooga shootings is placed firmly on Abdulazeez however we should also be asking, what part has government actions played in the radicalization of American citizens. In that respect, US authorities must accept some responsibility too.

Mistaken identity led to wrong person labelled in connection with Chattanooga killings

To end on a note of caution. I was alerted to an unfortunate case of mistaken identity via Facebook. A post read,

“woke up to the news that my good friend Qari Muhammad Yousef has been shot dead after killing 4 US marines and had the courtesy to inform us of his death directly on Facebook himself.

If only more people took the initiative to update us of their own death on Facebook.”

Mido Calipha Youssef was WRONGLY identified as the Chattanooga shooter by Al Anbar newspaper who featured his photo next to a story of Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, the actual shooter. The following image was posted.

11218837_10153522784814532_1004682955124541602_n

Mistaken identity, a name mix -up led to Mido Calipha Youssef being WRONGLY identified as the Chattanooga shooter.

Muslims have enough of a hard time as it is facing prejudice and expected to apologise for every killing going, in addition one poor man now has to explain that he is NOT connected in any way to the killings at military establishments in Tennessee. Imagine having to discuss that at a job interview!

Islamic State Karachi release audio interview discussing “Safoora carnage” Sabeen Mahmud and issue chilling warnings

CJ7KywgW8AAOnxo

Safoora bus attack, Karachi (Image from IS media release)

A group claiming to be Islamic State Karachi (Pakistan) have released an audio interview to journalists and politicians today entitled, “Men blinded by religion or endowed with understanding and vision”.  The audio is 1 hour 5 minutes long and is produced by Al-Qisaas Media.

The written communication alleged to be from IS features the familiar flag and contains links to several videos of Islamic State. An introduction to the audio refers to the Safoora bus attack in Karachi in May 2015 where gunmen shot dead 45 Ismailis and wounded 13 others, see following link,

“Pakistan: Deadly bus attack in Karachi targets Ismaili community, dozens killed and wounded.”

https://activist1.wordpress.com/2015/05/13/pakistan-deadly-bus-attack-in-karachi-targets-ismaili-community-dozens-killed-and-wounded/

A familiar nasheed chant featured on IS videos such as that of the burning alive of Jordanian pilot Moas al Kasasbeh is heard on the audio prior to the interview which is presented in the style of an academic debate. Below is the written introduction from IS Karachi…

Interview with Mujahid {Reason of Safoora Carnage} … the following are exact words of IS Karachi…

“The recent arrested suspects of the safoora bus attack in karachi, had the so called “experts” and “security analyst” confounded, leaving them utterly perplexed and gasping for words. None of the stereotypes matched the suspects. The madrassa haters were still pushing for operation against madrassas, but somehow the conviction had left their eerie cries for these people had nothing to do with madrassas. These were neither people living on the fringes of poverty, nor social outcasts and nor were they mentally disturbed sociopaths. These were all well educated individuals, hailing from prestigious institutions, coming from decent family backgrounds who could have had this world and its successes, yet somehow they were accused of throwing everything away for a never seen AKHIRA!
Regardless of  whether Saad Aziz, Azhar Ishrat and Hafiz Nasir did what they are accused off, the caravan of such gentlemen started off from Mus’ab bin Umair RA and boasts of individuals like Shaikh Osama bin Ladin, Dr. Arshad Waheed, Faisal Shahzad, Aafia Siddiqui and many more. It is high time that the world and especially the muslims, comprehend the drivers that motivate these men and understand their perspective from their own mouths.”

Synopsis of 1 hour audio tape

The listener is invited to listen to a detailed audio link of an interview between two men described as “mujahid”. There is a discussion on what is theism in general terms of different religions and the importance of total obedience to God who provides “an instruction manual to man” (Quran) and the Prophet who brings the message to the people (the followers). The message is given that any attack on these 3 will be met with “a furious reply”.

The interview moves on to discuss how to recognize the Prophet, the limits on behaviour, atheism and agnosticism and a man-made system. The Question and Answer style of the audio interview briefly debates the denial of God through theories of German philosopher Immanuel Kant and Charles Darwin (Theory of Evolution) which are described as “fallacies”. Their writings, thoughts, are examples given which are claimed to lead to the 5 foundations of the modern secular state defined as secularism, nationalism, democracy, capitalism and freedom of speech. There is also mention of the evil principles of Nicolo Machiavelli’s book “The Prince” describing how to run a state. The discussion then turns to the role of the Illuminati and monarchy and the power of a few rich families in states that rule over others.

The two men then explore the “four tools of the system”. These are defined as the military, education system, the NGOs and civil society, and the media and how they operate/control society. Discussion also includes the role of armed forces, propaganda and a Lord McCauley quote on education during the colonial period in India showing how it can be used to control the population. Islam is a complete way of life including education and the mujahid being interviewed states, “only Islam stands alone as the only religion whose foundations are preserved and in their original state and most importantly only Islam offers a complete alternative to replace the oppression of the secular state with divine justice”.

The interview then highlights 2 men Saad Aziz (arrested in relation to Safoora bus bombing) Azhar Ishrat and Hafiz Nasir and alleged accusations against them. There is also specific mention of Sabeen Mahmud, a Pakistani human rights activist and social NGO worker who was shot dead in April 2015 giving details of why she was targeted. A fellow activist, well known Pakistani lawyer Jibran Nasir also comes into the conversation regarding his and Sabeen’s secular stance. A discussion takes place regarding the issue of apostasy, who can be assassinated and for what reasons someone can be killed. This refers to all that are viewed as going against Islam (including women) and are described as “wild and filthy creatures”.

There is a debate on the role and beliefs of the Shia, Ismaili, Hazara communities. The mujahid being interviewed states, “we consider killing them the only solution for guarding Islam from their innovations” and later adds, “there is no middle ground between us and them.”

The topic of discussion then moves to attacks on armed forces, police, rangers and intelligence apparatus who are seen as allies of Shaitan and legitimate targets. Through-out those interviewed argue why such killings are “justified” according to their beliefs.

The Caliphate is the next topic on the agenda and the appointment of the Caliph, how IS came into being and the requirements for establishing an Islamic State. Hafiz Saeed Khan (former Taliban leader, Orakzai agency) was established as leader of Wilayat Khorasan (IS in Afghanistan, Pakistan) and it is stressed in the dialogue that every Muslim in this region must give bayah to IS.

There is reference to peace talks, those involved are seen as betraying Islam,. Although the rich history of Mujahideen is recognized, it is alleged that there is infiltration by agencies at all levels in relation to those active in AfPak.

The end message is that Allah is soft on believers and harsh on those mention throughout the audio that are seen to have chosen another system and turned away from Allah. IS argue that if you accept the ideology of Islam then “actions are so logical that even goats would not butt their heads over it.” Those following Islam are prepared to forsake this world because love for Allah is not devoid of actions and fight those mentioned with no fear of losing their lives. In fighting disbelievers and traitors, believers are said “to fear blame from no-one not even near and dear.” A quote is given to illustrate this.

Mujahid stress that followers “will fight, kill and die for Allah and his commandments” just as others will fight kill and die for land, power, resources and nationality and all of those false powers in God’s name that those opposing seem to believe in. It is argued that if people do not follow they will be replaced with a new nation.

Then comes a warning to all that have been mentioned as being against Islam, “no longer will we fight you in the plains and mountains, no, now we will bring this war where you fear it the most, where you sit in comfort and plan against the Muslims. We will bring it to your streets and your homes, your drawing rooms and your bedrooms, we will displace you just as you have displaced the people of Waziristan”… revenge is threatened.

Muslims are expected to follow IS in AfPak and give bayah to Caliph Abu bakr-al Baghdadi and repeat an oath of allegiance which is recited by those on the video.

Islamic Emirate: Taliban on how to achieve sustainable peace in Afghanistan

taliban-logo

Peace is a natural demand of every human being, the very secret behind prosperity and development. The well-being of a nation lies in peace. Peace is a need for a society as water is for a fish. Prior to anything our beloved country needs durable peace. No doubt, our peace loving nation is craving for peace.

To demand peace is easy. Every person can raise voice for peace but peace will only be achieved and established in light of ground realities and through consideration of views and opinions of the people. It cannot be achieved by mere assertions. Rather it needs practical steps like removal of hurdles in the way of peace, establishment of an atmosphere of confidence and trust and initiation of a wise process.

Unfortunately, the current situation in our beloved country is heading towards use of force instead of peace advancement. Despite repeated promises, the invaders have not withdrawn from the battle field. Night raids and blind bombardments are still continuing. The officials of Kabul Administration are using peace for their own political objectives and propaganda. It shows that they have no commitment for peace because despite their hues and cries for peace they launched military operations in different parts of the country in severe cold weather last year. They had destroyed homes and gardens of common people and these destructive operations are still continuing. These activities on the part of the invaders and the Kabul administration have paved the way for continuation of the war.

Following points should be considered for peace.

1. Commitment and sincerity are the foremost elements for the peace process. A peace process which is also an Islamic obligation should not be used as a tool for deception, cunning and accusation of the opposite side. First of all those who want peace and working in the peace process should fear Allah, the Almighty. They should feel responsibility and should not play with the future of the oppressed nation.

2. Peace requires deep thoughts and discussions. A minor mistake in peace process could bring in enormous problems to our nation.

3. Peace requires serious moves based on realities otherwise it will deteriorate the peace process and pave the way for prolongation of war. Therefore, all the steps should be taken very carefully.

4. An important point in a peace process is the realization of the sentiments of opposite side. Peace should not be dubbed as surrender. Those who desire peace should not use it as an instrument of propaganda.

Islamic Emirate has repeatedly stated its commitment for a sustainable peace and has made efforts in this regards. As such, has put forward sensible strategy regarding peace process in different official and unofficial meetings. The end of occupation and establishment of an Islamic system has been determined as the primary goals of their legitimate struggle and sacred Jihad. Like in the past, the Islamic Emirate wants peace today and will strive for it in future as well. But the peace process should have some indications of commitment, sincerity and transparency. Ground realities should be taken into account because following a mirage in a dry desert has no meaning.
