An audio statement has been released alleging that Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has given his allegiance to the newly elected leader of Islamic Emirate Afghanistan Mullah Mansour. This read,

“we pledge our allegiance … (to) our lord, leader of the faithful, Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansoor, may God protect him.”

Zawahiri, a trained eye surgeon succeeded Osama bin Laden after his death in 2011 and had previously helped found Egyptian militant group, Islamic Jihad. He is believed to be located in Afghanistan/Pakistan region. See following BBC link for profile,

Back in July, Long War Journal claimed close contact remained between Taliban leadership and Al Qaeda stating,

“Mansour and Siraj Haqqani are both allied with al Qaeda. Mansour recently described al Qaeda’s leaders as the “heroes of the current jihadist era.”

Siraj’s dossier is filled with ties to al Qaeda. For instance, files recovered in Osama bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound show that he was working closely with bin Laden’s lieutenants in the months leading up to the al Qaeda master’s death. Siraj’s father, Jalaluddin, is a legendary jihadist figure and was one of Osama bin Laden’s most important backers in South Asia.”
