Mullah Fazlullah leader of TTP who are said to have taken over Singer post (Khyber)

 Tehreek -e-Taliban statement 21st March 2015

Taliban have once again taken over the Khyber post named Singer and defeated the army. Two army troops were captured alive and slaughtered. In one mine attack 12 army personnel were targeted. On another advance approach the army ran away leaving behind the bodies of 6 of their soldiers. In order to conceal their weaknesses ISPR (Inter Services Public Relations) is telling a bundle of lies. By the grace of Allah not a single mujahid has been martyred nor has anyone been injured. The unpure army is raining bombs on peoples houses and bazaars which is indicative of their state of confusion. The moral of Mujahideen is high and they are looking towards Almighty Allah for His help and guidance. The government and army will have to pay for their deeds. They should do so much as they can bear themselves. The war between Shariat and democracy will be won by Shariat Inshah Allah.

Yemen: Islamic State claim responsibility for mosque bombings in Sanaa which kill 140 people injuring hundreds

CAjXoAzUcAAlAUf

“Daddy please wake up”  (via Rana Harbi)

Friday prayers at two mosques in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa were targeted to devastating effect by suicide bombers with the death toll now reaching 140. Lebanese journalist Rana Harbi posted a photo of a small boy said to be crying “Daddy please wake up” for over an hour in the midst of chaotic scenes of detached limbs and rivers of blood. Around 350 other persons were wounded in the attack allegedly claimed by the Islamic State (IS) and condemned by Al Qaeda in the Arabian peninsular (AQAP).

The Sanaa branch of IS said  in a statement that five suicide bombers carried out a ‘blessed operation’ against the ‘dens of the Shiites’. Threatening an escalation of sectarian violence, they also warned of an ‘upcoming flood’ of attacks against the rebels saying that the bombings were the “just the tip of the iceberg”. They stated, “infidel Houthis should know that the soldiers of the Islamic State will not rest until they eradicate them and cut off the arm of the Safavid (Iranian) plan in Yemen.” The following is an alleged audio statement by “Islamic State” on the Sanaa mosque bombings

CAkt8xQUIAAvE11

Aftermath of Friday’s bombing of mosques in Sanaa

The Badr and al-Hashoosh mosques were used by Shia Muslim Houthi group, backed by Iran which had taken control of the government in January 2015 with the President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi regime quitting in protest, he later fled to Aden. Houthis now control at least nine of Yemen’s 21 provinces. Reuters News Agency, reported,

“among the dead was Almortada al-Mahatwary, a leading figure in Yemen’s Shi’ite Zaidi sect, the Houthi-controlled al-Masirah television channel said.

Badr mosque was hit by two bombers and two others struck a second mosque. A fifth bomber was killed when he tried to attack a mosque in Saada province, a northern Houthi stronghold, but the device went off prematurely, a security source told Reuters.”

The country has seen a long period of instability with Hadi working closely with the US supporting drone strikes against Sunni militant group al Qaeda which had led to protests in the country. The American Embassy is now closed indefinately due to the security situation.

Hakal Bafana, a lawyer contact in Yemen who often posts on the political situation said of the Sanaa bombings, “I don’t feel like writing anymore on what these haiwaanat did in Sanaa mosques today. He added, “this is new: Yemen security statement says mosque suicide bombers (4 in Sanaa, 1 in Saada) had explosives hidden in arm or leg plaster casts in other parts of the country.” Bafana also updated on others parts of Yemen stating,

“officials in Al Houta town, capital of Lahj province, fled to Aden after militia took over control. Unclear earlier if Hadi militia or AQAP were the ones who took control. But now, it is confirmed that AQAP militants, not pro-Hadi militia, are in control of Al Houta. At least 19 soldiers killed in earlier clashes. Al Anad airbase is barely 20km NW of Al Houta. The US soldiers based there were evacuated en masse by a US Air Force plane earlier today. Basically, AQAP just chased the US out of Yemen”

Neighbouring Saudi Arabia which shares a 1,800-kilometer border issued a statement saying it “condems the terrorist attacks in Yemen as a threat to the security and unity of the country” and “confirms that it supports the legitimacy of the government of Yemen and stands by the brotherly people of Yemen with all its resources” see full statement below,

Farkhunda and Lahore killings: Acts of violent sexual perversion by “out of control” men

26D05D5F00000578-3002876-image-a-35_1426795750529

Horrific assault by a frenzied mob violating the body of a female

Let’s call a spade a spade! The frenzied killing of a woman by a mob in Afghanistan, beating her to death and setting her body alight for allegedly burning a copy of the Quran was NOT an act to defend the honour of Islam. It had the effect of doing the exact opposite in a very public arena. The irony is, those who claim to be protecting their faith, think nothing of violating the principles of its teachings. The men who participated (there were no women visible on film taking part in this appallingly cruel incident) initiated crowd acts of sexual perversion, males clearly “turned on” by their “out of control” brutality in dishonoring the body of a female alleged to have mental health problems.

Perverted pleasure dragging the burnt remains of a man in Lahore following the bombings of 2 churches.

As someone who once worked in forensic psychiatry it is not difficult to recognize a sexual element to the pathological patterns of behaviour though perpetrators often refuse to recognize it in themselves. I also observed this in the crowd violence which led to the beating and burning to death of two men following the Lahore church bombing incidents in Pakistan last week. The males involved were charged up, excited and almost “orgasmic” in their celebrations and put Christianity to shame. In fact some did not even want me to discuss this killing such was the disgrace to their community and fear of violent backlash.

Men turned on by a blood and burning lust, the pornography of violence

The lynching of Naeem and Babar Noman was deeply disturbing to observe on film, watching faces revel in their perversity, see following article,

“TTP JA spokesmen says 2 innocent men lynched have no links to us”.

https://activist1.wordpress.com/2015/03/16/ttp-ja-spokesmen-says-2-innocent-men-lynched-have-no-links-to-us/

Farkhunda, (age 27) the victim of the prolonged and bloody assault in Kabul was alleged to have a history of mental illness according to her mother. Radio Free Europe/Radio Free Liberty (RFERL) who highlighted the case wrote,

“a security official quoted the family of the victim as telling investigators that she had been suffering from mental illness for many years,

Footage obtained by RFE/RL shows a large crowd comprised mainly of young men repeatedly kicking and beating the woman. Some throw stones and buckets at her as she struggles to get off the ground.

The assault on the woman then continues as she lies on the ground, clearly unconscious and bleeding profusely.

Some men in the crowd can be heard shouting “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great”).”

proxy

Observing site where a woman’s body was burnt, many watched, no one intervened

The men who attacked Farkhunda and their supporters are deluded if they think their actions were in defence of Allah. The sick and mentally ill are vulnerable and must be protected. A society is judged by how it treats the ill and the poor in its midst. Compassion is a very important aspect of Islam, the word appearing many times within the Quran to remind us to uphold this practice.

The reality is, these men and those involved in this incident committed a serious criminal offence of a pathological nature which manifested itself in a form of violent pornography not acceptable in Islam. We must condemn such perverts for that is what they are, men who are so inadequate in their learning they clearly do not have even a basic concept of mental health issues, yet chose to act as judge, jury and executioner. These men along with those who pre-judged two men in Lahore are the sad failures of society, their mothers on learning of their proclivities would no doubt be horrified and ashamed of giving birth to such cruel and calculated individuals.

In Islam, men are taught to respect women, to lower their gaze so as not to be aroused by the female form. These men enjoyed violating a woman’s body, making physical contact with every area of her being and aroused themselves to ecstacy in doing so. Those in Kabul excelled in cruelty, scaling the heights of misogynistic depravity. We must condemn these lovers of violent porn and their despicable actions.

In Christianity, followers are taught to follow the teachings found in the parable of the Good Samaritan who goes to the aid of a stranger in need when others either engaged in violence or walked on by. The crowd in Lahore, beat, kicked, dragged and incinerated two innocent men to satisfy their blood lust. Both incidents showed the voyeuristic nature of individuals that watched, photographed, made their own “snuff” videos but no effort to intervene to stop the killing.

How many women would want to be in the company or feel safe with such sexual predators who get turned on by beating and burning a person to death. These men are the pits of society, the shit on the shoe, men unable or unwilling to control themselves yet so arrogant and self-deceiving they think they have the right to control and judge others! Society must hold them to account!

Still from new Islamic State in “Khorasan Province” video

Earlier this week the Islamic State in Khorasan Province sent a video to selected journalists confirming the death by drone of Mullah Abdul Rauf Khadim, (Abu Talha al Khorasani) deputy in command allegedly representing IS in Afghanistan, Pakistan region.

Islamic State have been working to gain a foothold in AfPak and gained some support from ex- Taliban commanders. Earlier this year, a former Tehreek-e-Taliban TTP spokesperson, previously known as “Shahidullah Shahid” appeared in a 16 minute video from Khorasan Media released January 2015 which shows a group of fighters pledging bayah (spiritual allegiance) to Caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi Qureshi al Hussaini, Islamic State (IS) see,

Shahidullah and ther former Taliban give bayah to al Baghdadi (leader of Islamic State)

Shahidullah parted ways with Pakistan Taliban last year during a period of internal disputes and divisions within the Taliban. Since then Taliban have sorted out some of their difference and announced a Coalition consisting of 3 Jihadi groups, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat ul Ahrar, Tehreek-e-Lashkar-e-Islam and Tehreek-e-Taliban under the name Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The decision was taken by the leaders of all the three jihadi groups, Maulana Fazlullah Khorasani, Omar Khalid Khorasani and Haji Mangal Bagh in a joint consultative meeting.

This latest Islamic State video entitled, “Sheikh Khadim is Gone and Revenge is Coming,”features a presentation from former TTP commander Hafez Saeed Khan. During his speech, he threatens revenge for Khadim’s death giving a clear message to disbelievers that they will be taught “a lesson that they will not forget.”

Mullah Abdul Rauf Khadim killed in drone strike

Former Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Rauf Khadim was reported killed in a US drone strike in northern Helmand, Afghanistan when the car he was travelling in was targeted and 6 persons killed. Rauf was a former Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detainee in charge of a Taliban unit before the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001. He spent 6 years in Guantanamo. Rauf recently parted company with the Afghan Taliban taking up with Islamic State to become deputy leader of IS in the region. Hafez Saeed Khan of Orakzai, former Emir of TTP in Oraksai became the new head of the Wilayat Khorasan (Afghanistan/Pakistan Province) of IS.

Al Arabiya has since reported that Khadim’s successor, Hafiz Wahidi was said to have been “killed in an airstrike along with nine others in the Sangin district of Helmand province late on Sunday, according to a defense ministry statement.”

Drone strike kills Taliban commander Khawrey Mehsud and 2 militants in Khurram, AfPak border region

Khawray Tasweer 01

Khawrey Tasweer

Tehreek -e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesperson Muhammad Khorasani sent a press release on Thursday to a list of journalists informing them of the targeted drone killing of senior militant commander Khawrey Mehsud who had been a close aide to former TTP Emir Hakimullah Mehsud.

Hakimullah was killed in a drone strike back in November 2013 which Pakistan Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan claimed to US was “the death of all peace efforts”. BBC reported him as saying that as the United States was “scuttling” efforts to begin peace talks, “every aspect” of Pakistan’s co-operation with Washington would be reviewed. Despite complaints to the US to cease drone strikes the Pakistan government is either incompetent or unwilling to take action to stop drone attacks which have killed many civilians as well as militants.

Khawrey Mehsud died alongside two other militants in the border region of Khurram Agency near to the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on March 18th. He was also known to have had close ties to Baitullah Mehsud one of the founders of TTP who was another militant leader eliminated in a US drone strike in 2009. Khorasani described Khawrey who hailed from South Waziristan as having been given great combat skills by Allah and a bodyguard that was “intelligent, capable and brave”. The commander had fought in Afghanistan’s Paktika, Kunar and Khost regions and was involved in the TTP war in Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Darra Adam Khel, Orakzai, Kurram and Waziristan.

Islamic Emirate: Preservation and Protection of National Assets is a National Obligation

alemarah-flag-e14199251737502

Preservation, protection and maintenance of national asset is a great religious and national obligation.

This is because on the one hand they are the essential pillar of the economic system of the country and on the other hand, play a fundamental role in the procurement of basic religious, educational and social needs of the Afghan Muslim people.

So construction and protection of public properties is a dire need for the strengthening and prolongation of Islamic system.

No doubt, all public properties (used by common people) like roads, bridges, tunnels, water dams, irrigation systems, electricity junctions, electricity transfer centers, mines extraction and refinery centers and their equipment, educational institutions, seminaries, mosques, schools, universities, health centers, clinics, hospitals etc. are the shared properties of the nation.

Their existence benefits the common people and lack of them harms the common man.

Their destruction is not only an anti-human crime but is a wicked act according to the Islamic Sharia, because public properties are part of the “Baitulmal”.

Any intentional tampering with and destruction of Baitulmal is a great sin as per the injunction of the holy religion of Islam.

If we go through the history of the guided caliphs (may Allah be pleased with them all) or the history of the Muslim Amirs who came after them, we would find out that each of them had instructed his Jihadi commanders with an eye to the situation of that time to thwart every kind of corruption and destruction during Jihadi operations as best as they could.

The instructions of Abu Bakr Siddique (may Allah be pleased with Him) is spectacularly clear. He addressed Mujahideen: “Stay a while, I want to advise you about ten things, remember them all…. In his instruction, he advised them to shun from betrayal, embezzlement and avoid the killing of unarmed people, cutting of fruit-bearing trees and the killing of cattle.

The esteemed Amir-ul-momineen Mullah Mohammad Omar Mujahid (may Allah protect him) following the footsteps of the righteous Amirs has repeatedly instructed his Mujahideen in his messages to protect (people’s) personal properties and national assets.

For example, in his message on the eve of Eid-ul-fitr 2014, addressing the Mujahideen, he said to them:” This is your religious and national obligation to strive for the wellbeing of people…. Causing harm to people’s life, property and honor is a great crime, the perpetrator of which will not escape accountability neither in this world nor the world to come.

Your conduct with people should be but tolerance, humility, patience, selflessness and mutual respect…….. you should take care of the people’s life and property during Jihadic operations so that they may not be harmed.”

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan began the sacred Jihad on the basis of the rulings of Islamic Sharia aimed at gaining independence of the country and people, forcing the invaders to leave the country and establishing an independent Islamic regime.

Therefore, it deems it its duty to preserve and protect public properties-even it considers it a national and Sharia- based responsibility of every Mujahid. So every Mujahid is duty-bound on the basis of Sharia to hinder harm to and destruction of baitulmal (public property).

The Islamic Emirate will take drastic measures in the light of Islamic Sharia against those who try to cause harm to the people and the country.

End

Northern Ireland: Gerry McKerr one of the original “Hooded Men” dies, time for a UK inquiry.

1484685_688307494613644_7610575387091311017_n

Gerry McKerr wanted to see justice

Gerry McKerr one of the original “hooded men” has died in hospital on Tuesday age 71. Back in December 2014 Amnesty International called for an independent UK investigation into the alleged torture of 14 suspects detained by the British army including Mr McKerr. The abuses occurred during a period of time known as the “Troubles” in Northern Ireland (1968 – 1998) in which over 3,600 people were killed and thousands more were injured, see following link for Amnesty International statement on treatment of the hooded men,

“Amnesty International demands UK inquiry into hooded men case”

Surviving-hooded-men-ahea-012

The term “hooded men” refers to a group of men aged who were taken from their homes to three holding camps before being transferred to RAF Ballykelly, in Co Derry as part of British Army Operation Demetrius. This involved the mass arrest and internment (imprisonment without trial) of 342 people suspected of being involved with the Irish Republican (IRA), who were campaigning against the state. According to the Independent, the treatment of the men included the following,

“the numbers 1-12 were inked on the back of their hands and soles of their feet before they were stripped naked, weighed and examined, hooded (tightened so the men could barely breathe), forced into prolonged stress positions, beaten with fists, feet and batons, thrown against walls, dragged through a gauntlet of club-wielding guards and deprived of food, water, and sleep.”

The torture methods devised by the British Army and used on detainees came to be known as the “five techniques” which were hooding, prolonged stress positions, white noise, sleep deprivation and deprivation of food and drink.

Some of the treatment was so distressing, victims wanted to die and included allegedly throwing men from a helicopter whilst hooded. The men thought they were being thrown to their deaths (which was a method used in Vietnam on the Vietcong during the war) though in the Irish case the helicopter was around 20 feet from the ground as opposed to hundreds of feet in the air. Details of Gerry’s traumatic experience can be read here,

“The 14 hooded men blogspot”

http://the14hoodedmen.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/gerry-mckerr_20.html

Amal Clooney, international law and human rights specialist is now representing all but one of the men who initially won their case against the UK in 1976 with the European Commission of Human Rights ruling that they were subjected to torture. However an appeal led to the findings being overturned by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) stating that their ordeal did not constitute torture and was defined instead as “inhuman and degrading treatment”.

Those tortured refer to themselves as ‘The Guinea Pigs’ and claim they were used to test out torture techniques which were later exported round the world. Their stories appeared in a book of the same name written by John McGuffin (published in 1974, 1981). Re-opening of the cases could prove a big embarrassment for the British government who have so far largely avoided addressing this issue.

The BBC reported that research carried out by Ulster university on behalf of the Commission for Victims and Survivors found that “almost 30% of the population of Northern Ireland suffer mental health problems and nearly half of those are directly related to the Troubles.” Yesterday, the work of the WAVE centre, which supports those affected was recognized though awarding them the GSK Impact award which includes £30,000 in funding. The organization beat more than 350 charities across the UK in the process.

Statement from Pat Finucane Centre on the death of Gerry McKerr

(March 19th 2015)

Jim McIlmurray
Case Coordinator
The Hooded Men

It is with great regret that I announce the death of Gerry McKerr from Lurgan.

Gerry was one of the original “Hooded Men” and had been active in the Republican movement, since the mid 1960s.

Gerry was arrested and interned on Monday the 9th of August 1971.Early on the morning of 11th August Gerry and the others were hooded and handcuffed, bundled into a truck where they were kicked and beaten, and brought to a helicopter.

After a flight of 30-60 minutes, they were pulled out of the helicopter, beaten and put into another vehicle, which brought them to RAF Ballykelly.

At RAF Ballykelly, Gerry’s hood was tightened and he was beaten badly before being taken into a room with a noise similar to “a constant roar of steam escaping a valve from a steam boiler.”

He was given another physical examination, stripped, and issued a pair of army overalls that were far too small. He was put into the search position against the wall, his feet bare on a slippery floor.

After a period of time, he was no longer able to hold himself up, fell and passed out. He awoke while being beaten around the kidneys. This pattern continued for days.

Gerry was eventually given a pair of boots and taken back to a helicopter, beaten all the way. He was transported to a place where he was served with internment papers; he felt some sense of relief that although the beatings continued, he was no longer subjected to the wall-standing and other techniques.

At Ballykelly, the torture continued. Gerry found it much more difficult to keep track of time. The interrogations became much more violent, as he was threatened, abused and insulted each time before being taken back to what he began to refer to as the “music room.”

He was told that he would never see his wife and children again if he did not cooperate. I recall Gerry telling me, his thoughts at the time were “Hell dare not be like this,”

After several days, Gerry was finally allowed to sleep, given a meal, and permitted to wash up before being taken to Crumlin Gaol.

At the Gaol, all of the men experienced an air of jubilation that they were still alive and free of the torture. Gerry called it “an absolute high.” In mid-October 1971, the Hooded Men were transferred from Crumlin Road to Long Kesh internment camp, where Gerry served as OC.

Gerrard McKerr was released from Long Kesh in 1975. The last year of his interment he was sick, developing a number of lumps on his neck for which he was given antibiotics.
Upon his release, he was diagnosed with lymphoma.

Two years later, his wife called him to the door; there were some men who were looking for him. Gerry, sensing trouble, grabbed the first man and slammed the door; the second man fired a gun through the door, hitting Gerry in the abdomen and groin area.

He believed the perpetrators were members of the Glenanne gang, to which nearly 90 murders in the Armagh area were attributed, including those of the Miami Showband.

Six weeks later, when he was getting ready to take his children to school, Gerry found a bomb planted beneath his car. Gerry moved his family from their home to a new house in the town.

I was with Gerry the moment we received the news the Irish government would request the European courts reopen the case of the Hooded Men. He was delighted and said “Justice, finally we will get justice”.

I will ensure that Gerry will receive justice. The case will continue in his honour.

Our thoughts are with his wife Eileen and children at this sad time.

Gassed: More allegations of Assad atrocities in Syria (photos, videos) Amnesty International issue press release

CARyWUuU8AALcZT

Photos and videos have appeared once again on social media from activists claiming to show adults and children suffering from the affects of chlorine gas in Syria. Six deaths within one family have been reported by eyewitnesses to Amnesty International and around 100 other victims are suffering. The alleged gas attacks are said to have taken place in Sermine, northwestern Idlib province on March 16th 2016 perpetrated by the Bashar al-Assad regime. UN security council has recently condemned the use of chemical weapons including chlorine in Syria which is banned for use in war under the Geneva protocol of 1925. Other incidents have been reported this year though the Syrian regimes has dismissed this as propaganda. See video links of the latest incidents,

Eyewitnesses to an alleged chlorine gas attack last night in Idlib in northern Syria have told Amnesty International about the horrific death of an entire family, including three children under the age of three.
Scores of other civilians were exposed to toxic chlorine gas in two apparent chemical weapons attacks allegedly carried out by government forces in and around the town of Sermine last night.
Around 100 people in all were exposed to toxic levels of chlorine after Syrian armed forces helicopters dropped four barrels containing the gas in two attacks on Sermine and nearby Qmainass between 9:15pm and 11:00pm, according to the eyewitnesses. The injured included a small number of fighters from the Free Syrian Army armed group, but the vast majority were civilians.
A doctor and a civil defence worker told Amnesty that those affected by the attack had no injuries associated with explosive weapons, but showed symptoms characteristic of a chemical weapons attack, including reddened eyes, shortness of breath, continuous coughing, respiratory distress, vomiting, and drooling from the mouth. A civil defence member who responded to a home near the attack site in Sermine told Amnesty:
“The smell was horrible. We evacuated people. We were told that a family lives in the basement. Three of us went down the stairs. I took one breath and then when I took the second my throat burned, my eyes started burning. We didn’t have masks. We don’t have special clothes. I couldn’t proceed. I was holding my breath but couldn’t hold it further. I saw a woman on the stairs. She was blue and was not breathing. We evacuated her and a minute later the next team went in and evacuated the other family. They were wearing masks – that is why they were able to go all the way down. They evacuated the father, mother and three babies. They all died.”
The names of the family members who were killed are Warf Mohammad Taleb, his mother Ayoush Hassan Qaq, his wife Ala al-Jati, and their three children: Sara Taleb, A’isha Taleb, and Mohamad Taleb.
A local activist posted video footage from a hospital in the aftermath of the attacks. It shows a dying infant lying naked on a table and the limp, naked bodies of the other two Taleb children being brought in and placed on top of their mother’s corpse on a hospital bed.
A Syrian military spokesperson has denied responsibility for the attacks.
Amnesty International Middle East and North Africa Director Philip Luther said:
“These horrific attacks that resulted in civilians, including small children, suffering excruciating deaths, are yet more evidence that the Syrian government forces are committing war crimes with impunity.
“The situation in Syria must be referred to the International Criminal Court as a matter of urgency.”

2013 chemical attacks

In September 2013, after hundreds of people died in alleged Sarin gas attacks on Ghouta, outside Damascus, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad acceded to the Chemical Weapons Convention and pledged to destroy the country’s stockpile of prohibited chemical agents. However, a year later, in September 2014, an Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons fact-finding mission found “compelling confirmation” that a toxic chemical was used “systematically and repeatedly” as a weapon in villages in northern Syria earlier in the year.

New Raqqa report

Amnesty released a new report today providing damning evidence that Syrian government forces unlawfully killed up to 115 civilians in a series of aerial attacks on the city of Raqqa in November, with some of the attacks possibly amounting to war crimes. The 25-page report – Al-Raqqa under attack: Syrian air force strikes against civilians – documents a series of airstrikes between 11 and 29 November that killed scores of civilians, including 14 children. The attacks included assaults on a busy market crammed full of civilians, a mosque, shops, a transport hub, a storage facility and a residential building.

August 2013 attack

Back on August 21st, 2013, I received an early report of alleged attack on East Ghouta which read,

East Ghouta, Damascas province, 21-08-2013: regime’s chemical weapons attacks on Ein Tarma and Zamalka in the East Ghouta region of Damascus province tonight. According to an eyewitness in East Ghouta, regime forces are now launching missiles at the areas of the attacks in order to prevent rescuers and medical personnel from reaching them.

At that time the news had not reached mainstream media and it was difficult to determine the extent of the horrors, the following was my initial report with photos, videos and a list of victims see,

“East Ghouta Damascus Syrian opposition claiming attacks with hundreds killed, urgent investigation required.”

US ‘discussed sending Guantanamo Brit to Saudi’, despite promise to UK

Shaker-Aamer-Large-616x346

Reprieve statement March 17, 2015

US officials may have attempted to negotiate the forced return of British resident Shaker Aamer to Saudi Arabia, despite a promise to the UK not to do so, it’s been revealed.

Previously-secret documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests reveal that in August 2010, less than two months after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told then-Foreign Secretary William Hague that she “welcomed… discussing Mr Aamer’s case”, the US instructed its Saudi embassy on “engaging Saudi Arabia on Shaker Aamer”. Another document reveals how, at an August 2013 meeting between senior US officials and the Saudi interior minister, Mr Aamer was described as a “Saudi citizen with significant ties to the UK”.

Shaker Aamer, a father of four British children, has been held at Guantanamo Bay without charge or trial since 2002. He has been cleared for release twice, by the Bush administration in 2007, and by President Obama in 2009. The British Government has repeatedly said Mr Aamer should be returned to his British wife and children in London.

In January, following talks between Prime Minister David Cameron and President Obama, the White House said it would “prioritise” Mr Aamer’s case, but concerns were raised when, one month later, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that Mr Aamer’s case was not “on his desk.” At a Parliamentary debate this afternoon, MPs will call on President Obama to keep his promise to free Mr Aamer to the UK.

Cori Crider, a director at human rights organization Reprieve and a lawyer for Mr Aamer, said:

“It is a scandal that Shaker Aamer continues to languish in Guantanamo. Bland reassurances that the Obama administration is prioritising his case are no longer enough. We need a concrete timetable for his return home, and we must see answers on why this didn’t happen years ago. For a start, we need to know what happened in secret meetings between the UK and US, and the US and Saudi Arabia – are these indications of an attempt to silence him by handing him over to the Saudi regime?”

High Court dismisses appeal to stop execution of Pakistani convicted aged 14

Shafqat-Hussain-pictured--008

Reprieve Statement Tues 17 March 2015

The Sindh High Court has dismissed an appeal by lawyers seeking a stay of execution for Shafqat Hussain, a Pakistani convicted aged 14 following nine days of police torture.

The execution of those convicted as juveniles is illegal in Pakistan, as is the use of torture evidence. In January, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar announced to Pakistan’s National Assembly that it would conduct an inquiry into Shafqat’s conviction. However, it has failed to do so and last week issued an execution warrant for Thursday (19th).

Shafqat’s lawyers from Justice Project Pakistan argued that the scheduling of the execution without the full inquiry that was promised is illegal and arbitrary, as well as highlighting the fact that he was convicted as a child and using evidence extracted through torture. Despite the High Court rejecting the appeal, the Pakistani government retains the right to stay executions up until the last minute.

German and Italian representatives from the European Union attended today’s hearing.

The Ministry of the Interior announced this morning that 12 men had been hanged, the largest number of executions since Pakistan lifted its death penalty moratorium on December 17th. The number of those on Pakistan’s death row who were convicted as juveniles is not known.

Maya Foa, Director of Reprieve’s death penalty team, said: “Time to save Shafqat is running out. Minister Nisar has the opportunity to save the life of someone tortured into ‘confessing’ to a crime when he was just a child, and to conduct the full inquiry into his case that he promised. In the interests of justice, he must take this opportunity and put a halt to Shafqat’s execution – and all others – while a full and proper inquiry is carried out.”
